Keanu Reeves ranks among some of the most cherished actors that the film industry has ever witnessed. And in a world where Kryptonian superheroes and lab-created Hulks are hailed as action figures, Reeves’ John Wick is a welcoming interlude for those who long for gritty, authentic action sequences that remain untarnished by tacky special effects. But when it comes to putting down the bad guys, even John Wick bows down to Ethan Hunt.

With 42 years worth of experience and an arsenal of blockbuster ventures, Cruise has essentially redefined the trajectory of cinema with his critically acclaimed and award-winning movies, the likes of which include Top Gun: Maverick, the Mission: Impossible series, and Edge of Tomorrow, to name a few.

The icing on the cake, however, isn’t his stellar acting or a script that keeps the audience hooked, it’s the incredible physical feats that the Oscar nominee accomplishes that would make one break a sweat just by thinking about it. And Reeves, 58, recognizes this inherent talent and prowess that places Cruise, 60, at the very top of the kingdom.

Talking to Cinema Blend for his latest outing as the fan-favorite tuxedo-clad hitman in John Wick 4, a humble Reeves expressed his genuine awe toward the Jack Reacher star who is renowned for doing his own stunts, irrespective of how wild and dangerous they might be. When a comparison was drawn between the two, the Constantine star believed he came nowhere near the level of eminence that Cruise held for all his toils and mind-blowing movie outings.

“What Tom Cruise does is extraordinary and special and something that… Again, another legend in another universe. I’m more like on the ground playing in the mud and he’s like flying and jumping and outside of buildings and helicopters, fighter jets.”

And well, he’s not wrong either.

Two Legends Cut From the Same Cloth

Reeves and Cruise, however different they might be in their respective styles and performances, are players belonging to the same league of champions. Not to mention, they share the same burning “passion” for films, as The Matrix star himself remarked while acknowledging Cruise as the luminary of the action genre.

“I think we’re just the beneficiaries of his excellence, you know? And he’s inspiring. And I think one thing I could say is that I share, as you spoke about, the passion for movies. We’re lucky to be there and we’re just trying to have fun and hope people like what we did.”

With an age difference of only two years, their careers certainly strike as analogous in some aspects, especially since they’re both esteemed action heroes, albeit they have never shared the screen together yet.

Mission: Impossible Dead Reckoning Part I will hit theatres on 12 July 2023.
