Following the success of the first season of The Last of Us, HBO confirmed that the show has been renewed for season 2. “We pretty much cover the first game in this first season,” co-showrunner Craig Mazin told The Playlist.

Of course, it would be quite uneasy to push the entire story of the second game in one season, so, the idea of a third season is not off the table. The most recent update from, Mazin indicates three more seasons might hit Max in the future. “You never know. It can end up being three or five. But four seems like a good number,” Mazin told The Hollywood Reporters.

“Some seasons, because of the story we’re telling, will need fewer episodes and some will need more. The best news is the audience wants more. We will not indulge a desire for more simply to make them happier when they hear how many episodes are announced. And if they don’t like how many episodes are in a season because they want more, well, OK.”

Mazin also said that at this point it is difficult to say “if any season will actually have the same amount of episodes.” But the showrunners are keen on ending the show on a good note.

The Sony videogame on which The Last of Us is based, has only two parts. Neil Druckmann once said that it is up to the developer Naughty Dog, Sony never pressurized the developer for a sequel and the showrunner also believes that it’s up to “us whether we want to continue or not.” But Mazin’s recent comments on the show sparked concern among fans online, primarily because there are only two parts of the game. Fans don’t want any loose ends to mess up with the story. Also, Pedro Pascal’s presence in the additional seasons would be crucial to keep the fans sticking around the show.

Since it’s a show based on a post-apocalyptic world, characters tend to die but fans might be upset if their favorite characters die.

Another feels it unnecessary to stretch the show any further.

As of now, the addition of further seasons after part 2 is still under the ‘potential’ tag. But given the fame and success of the show, it could extend to more seasons as teased by Mazin.
