DCU’s Hawkgirl actress Isabela Merced’s choice of words while discussing James Gunn’s much-hyped Superman project has concerned many fans. She used the word “funny” to describe the film, which stuck out like a sore thumb for fans. Fans have made it clear that they don’t want another funny DC project like Peacemaker from the director.
However, Merced also shared that Gunn had a clear vision while filming, which should be promising enough that he would deliver a great film. Superman is all set to kickstart DCU most stylishly, introducing a bunch of DC superheroes as side characters, including Hawkgirl.
Isabela Merced Says Superman Film Is “Funny” Which Has Concerned Many Fans
Isabela Merced is slowly finding her way to every popular franchise. She was seen in SSU’s Madame Web earlier this year and later was confirmed to appear in Superman. She is also part of Alien: Romulus and The Last of Us Season 2. Merced opened up about her several roles when she appeared on Josh Horowitz’s Happy Sad Confused podcast.
Speaking about her upcoming Superman film, Merced shared that the David Corenswet-starrer is a comic-accurate film with a James Gunn twist. She felt the movie was funny and clever yet heartwarming, and expressed her excitement about working with Gunn. Merced shared with the Happy Sad Confused podcast:
The whole movie is very loyal to comic books, but with the ‘James Gunn twist’. So I really think it’s funny, it’s clever, but it’s heartwarming… At least, that was my experience on set. Obviously, things can change in the editing room but, God, I loved James.
Fans have seen more than enough comic book movies in recent times to realize that “funny” doesn’t always work. They are particularly concerned that Superman is a movie that shouldn’t be too funny. Many fans pointed this out in the comments, sharing that it made them skeptical about the first DCU film from Gunn.
However, some fans also shared that people are reading too much into Merced’s remarks. They explained that Merced could’ve been talking about character dynamics rather than the whole movie itself. Some of the fan reactions read:
"It's funny" I'm praying it's not peacemaker type funny

Funny Lowkey scares me. Hopefully it’s Superman type of funny and not James Gunn funny 😭

"funny" here we go again

Every CBM is looking the same, I'm tired 😩
She probably hasn’t read the comic books, cause funny is not DC for the most part. So seems Gunn’s twist is to ruin it and make it a joke….cause that’s all he knows how to do.

Just wait to see the reaction of those people when they read “funny”

I understand that some people are concerned about the word "funny" coming from a james gunn project, but I imagine she's referring to the characters interactions, guy/superman, krypto/mr terrific, I can see a pretty comedic dynamic.

The filming of Superman wrapped in July and is all set to go into post-production. The film will also star Rachel Brosnahan, Edi Gathegi, Nathan Fillion, Anthony Carrigan, María Gabriela de Faría, Sara Sampaio, Skyler Gisondo, and Nicholas Hoult.
Isabela Merced Further Shared Her Experience And The Character She Was Excited For In The Film
Isabela Merced has her fair share of experience working on big-budget productions. She has a lot of admiration for James Gunn and how things operated on the Superman set. She shared that Gunn knew exactly what he wanted and the entire crew, who had been working with him for over 20 years, were prepared to ride along with their director. Merced shared:
He’s so prepared. I could exhale on set and didn’t need to worry about exhaling after because James is one of those people who knows exactly what he wants, will stop at nothing to get it, has a short list, communicates with his team and they’re all prepared when they get there because they’ve worked with him for twenty plus years.
Merced also shared the one character that she was most excited for the viewers to see in the film. She shared that Nathan Fillion‘s Guy Gardner/Green Lantern was a fantastic addition to the film. Merced shared, “I’m so excited for everyone to see Nathan Fillion. I think he’s fantastic.” Fans are also excited to see The Rookie star finally playing a live-action version of the character.
Superman is scheduled to be released in theaters on July 11, 2025.
