Before Shazam! Fury of the Gods hit cinemas, actor Grace Caroline Currey talked to The Direct about her part and the film’s greater context in the DC Universe as it prepares for its significant revamp. James Gunn, the co-leader of the newly minted DCU has revealed a portion of the first Chapter.

Among other projects, the schedule includes the new Superman, Batman, Booster Gold, and Green Lantern projects. Even if they seem intriguing, these projects cast doubt on Shazam and The Flash. Will the clock be turned back? The new DC Universe won’t fully remake everything as Gunn has stated in the past, but it will be judicious in what it preserves and where it makes a fresh start.

In a recent interview, Caroline was asked to comment on Gunn and Safran’s vision for the DCU. She was also asked about her potential future in the franchise. Grace Caroline confessed that as of now she is not in talks about returning for future projects.

“Gosh, so I’m a fan. I am a fan of the DC universe and a bit of a comic book nerd myself… But yeah, I’m really, really curious and excited to see what [DC Studios co-lead] James Gunn does and what stories he brings out. And I’ve worked with Peter [Safran] since I was 18, and he’s just so lovely, and I think… he really elevated the horror film genre and I’m really curious to see what they do with DC.”

She continued,

“I think we’re in incredible hands. I got excited about the slate because I know James Gunn just brings so much to comic book lore and he’s so well-versed. So yeah, I’m not in the conversations, of course.”

However, the actor is ready to appear whenever Safran and Gunn call upon her. “You know, I’m along for the ride. And when they say, ‘Grace, it’s time,’ I’m there… I’m really, really curious.” She only had good things to say about the co-heads of the DC Studios.

The Shazam was born to play Mary in the DCU

When the actress was asked about her role in Shazam and what she feels about the character. To answer that, Caroline recalled her conversation with her brother and how he encouraged her to audition for the part.

“I gotta say, Mary… It’s unusual how much I feel I was made to play her and how privileged I am that I got to play her, considering I feel the way I do about her. When I first auditioned and Shazam wasn’t made yet, it was just announced that David [F. Sandberg] was going to be directing it, my brother was like Grace, ‘You’ve got to audition for this. You are Mary.’ And he pulled out his comics of Shazam and showed me pictures of her.”

The actress enthusiastically agreed when it was said that Shazam! is essentially in its own niche of DC mythos, mentioning how that was one of her first impressions after seeing Fury of the Gods.

The fact that DCU co-lead Peter Safran produced the Shazam movies, definitely reflects well for everyone involved in those films, as Zachary Levi noted in a previous interview. Unfortunately, one cannot truly rely on that mostly because Gunn and Safran replaced legends like Dwayne Johnson and Henry Cavill, so there is no guarantee they won’t replace Grace Caroline. The future of Shazam in DCU is unpredictable considering only chapter one of DCU has been announced. Fans will have to wait for more slates to finally know where DCU will go with stories like Flash and Shazam.
