Tom Cruise was reportedly responsible for Katie Holmes’ exit from The Dark Knight

Despite the success of Batman Begins, which marked the beginning of one of the most influential trilogies that redefined the superhero landscape. Katie Holmes’ departure from the role of Rachel Dawes came as a surprise to everyone. And following her exit from the role, Maggie Gyllenhaal was then recast as Bruce Wayne’s love interest in the sequel.

However, after Holmes’ exit from the franchise, many reports at the time held Tom Cruise responsible for the actress’ departure, who was married to Holmes at the time. It was speculated that the Top Gun: Maverick actor took control of the Mad Money actress’ career and was allegedly very possessive, which led to the actress’s departure from the TDK trilogy. One report stated,

“We’re told Tom also imposed his will during “Batman Begins” … prohibiting Katie from flying with the rest of the cast. Instead, Katie would only travel on Tom’s private jet.

However, these rumors were later deemed false after Katie Holmes went on to debunk these claims and clarified that her decision of leaving the franchise had nothing to do with Tom Cruise.

Katie Holmes left The Dark Knight to pursue her passion project

Although roles in big franchises come off as pretty alluring to most celebrities due to the large paycheck and security of reprising their role in future installments. However, there are certain actors, who are more inclined towards small and Indie roles because of the creative freedom that comes with it.

The same can be said for Katie Holmes, who went on to leave the role of Rachel Dawes to pursue a more low-budget passion project at the time, Mad Money. Even though the actress stated that she enjoyed her time in Batman Begins and praised Christopher Nolan, Holmes expressed that she doesn’t regret her decision to work in Mad Money. She stated,
