While replacing the legendary 76-year-old star is no short of a mammoth feat, fans seem to be excited about Olyphant’s casting as the voice actor for the cyborg assassin. At least half of the pressure must be alleviated for him after having secured the fandom’s support, and as for the other half, we’ll soon find out.

Timothy Olyphant Replaces Arnold Schwarzenegger As the Terminator

At its first slate preview event held in Los Angeles, Netflix announced a deluge of upcoming animated shows at its Next on Netflix: Animation event, one of which is Terminator Zero.

The streaming service also revealed that Star Wars actor Timothy Olyphant will be voicing the formidable cybernetic butcher in the new series, a character who has been depicted by the mighty Arnold Schwarzenegger throughout all six films.

Olyphant, 56, has starred in numerous popular films and TV shows like Daisy Jones & the Six, Deadwood: The Movie, and Justified: City Primeval. In his more recent credits, he bagged the lead role in the Noah Hawley-helmed FX sci-fi horror series, Alien.

In a conversation with The Hollywood Reporter last year, Schwarzenegger made it clear as day that while the long-running sci-fi franchise is “not done,” he certainly is. So, while the upcoming Netflix show is set in the Terminator universe, it will be introducing a throng of new characters, a change that fans are welcoming with arms wide open (via DiscussingFilm).

A Glance At Netflix’s Terminator Zero Starring Timothy Olyphant

Set in two time periods, Terminator Zero shuffles between the past and the future; in 2022, an unabating future war continues between a handful of human survivors and a limitless army of machines. Meanwhile, the AI called Skynet waged a war against humanity in 1997 as it gained self-awareness. Cue the soldier who time travels to salvage the fate of humanity.

The aforementioned soldier goes back to 1997 to protect Malcolm Lee, a scientist who is working on a new AI system that can counteract Skynet’s “impending attack against humanity.” But Malcolm’s path to triumph is far from clear as a ruthless assassin from the future hunts him, forever changing the fate of his three children.

So far, only Olyphant has been revealed as the voice actor in the imminent sci-fi animated series

While Mattson Tomlin – who is also penning The Batman II – is the writer and showrunner, Japanese animator Masashi Kudo – best known for his work on the action-adventure anime Bleach – will be sitting on the director’s chair for the upcoming Terminator anime. Skydance and I.G. will serve as the executive producers along with Tomlin.

Terminator Zero will air on Netflix on August 29, 2024.
