The Original Harry Potter Casting Director Left Over Daniel Radcliffe’s Hiring
Daniel Radcliffe began his journey as the Boy Who Lived with 2001’s Harry Potter and the Sorcerer’s Stone. Chris Columbus and David Heyman went through extensive auditions, considering thousands of British boys of the right age for the role of Harry Potter. Despite their efforts, they did not find the right actor.
According to Entertainment Weekly, Columbus had a clear preference for Daniel Radcliffe, whom he had seen in a BBC production of David Copperfield. However, Radcliffe’s parents were initially hesitant about him taking the role.
“My casting director said to me, ‘You know, I’m so frustrated with you! I don’t know what you want!'” Columbus recalls. “And I picked up the copy of David Copperfield and said, ‘This is what I want! This is the person I want to be in the film! It doesn’t get much easier or simpler than that!'”
Frustration mounted, and after an unproductive casting session, Columbus expressed his desire for Radcliffe by pointing to the David Copperfield production. Eventually, Radcliffe was cast as Harry Potter, and the casting director resigned the following week.

During an interview with The New York Times, Daniel Radcliffe discussed his experiences working on Harry Potter and the Sorcerer’s Stone. Radcliffe revealed that he no longer felt embarrassed by some of the scenes he portrayed as a child in the film.
“Now I’m able to look back and go, ‘OK, you were a kid, it’s fine,’” he said, laughing. “It’s still a lovely memory.”
