The Expendables 4 revisits the franchise’s gritty and unabashedly R-rated roots, serving up high-octane action courtesy of a genuinely rough-and-tumble crew of mercenaries. The series has thrived, in no small part, due to its star-studded ensemble of action legends. In this installment, fresh faces join the familiar ones, hinting at an evolution for the franchise. However, The Expendables 4 retains all the action and humor that has kept the series a fan favorite for more than a decade.
To breathe life into those scenes and the film’s other daring stunts, the production crew enlisted the expertise of stunt coordinator Alan Ng. Ng boasts a rich history as both a stunt performer and coordinator, with a close working relationship with Jackie Chan. Ng’s impressive resume also features credits in films like The Karate Kid, The Spy Next Door, and Hidden Strike.
Expendables 4 Stunt Coordinator Has Learned A Lot From Jackie Chan
During an interview with Screenrant, Alan Ng was asked whether he has any insights or lessons from his collaborations with Jackie Chan and how he influenced his work on projects like Expendables. In response, Alan Ng expressed his ongoing learning experience from Jackie Chan, even after 15 years of collaboration. Chan, a legendary figure with vast experience, particularly in Hollywood and Asia, continues to impart wisdom and insights to Ng.
Alan Ng told Screenrant:
“I have learned so many things from Jackie even now, after 15 years of working with Jackie, I’m still learning. He is a legend, and he has so much experience. Having previously worked a lot in Hollywood, he knows how different it is to Asia.”
Alan Ng described his inclusion in Jackie Chan’s stunt team as a dream come true, although he reminisced about the simpler days when he was solely a stunt performer without the added responsibilities of being an action director or stunt coordinator.
Jackie Chan Rejected A Role In Expendables 4
The impending release of The Expendables 4 is drawing near, and avid fans of the series have discerned significant distinctions from its predecessors. Undoubtedly, the extended hiatus and the notable absence of several iconic figures are poised to impact the franchise negatively.
While witnessing your beloved stars unite on the silver screen for a nostalgic and otherworldly experience is undeniably enthralling, the sentiment doesn’t necessarily extend to the actors themselves. In an interview with Den Of Geek, Jackie Chan revealed his reluctance to accept a role of such limited scope, where he would have only a brief five-minute window to share the stage with other prominent figures.
Chan told Den Of Geek:
“Then this morning I did hear – the office called – Sly [Stallone] wants me for Expendables 4. I said, ‘Okay.’ Because they already asked me to be in two and three, but I refused. Well, I didn’t refuse, but I said, ‘Sly, can’t we just do you and me? Not just a bunch of people and me only coming out for five minutes.’ Because then the audience is, ‘Oh!’ And then I’m gone.”
During the interview, the martial artist disclosed that he had received multiple offers to join the franchise. The Expendables 4 will hit the theaters on September 22.
