Dustin Hoffman, despite major success, acknowledges some missed opportunities in his career. Known for his roles in acclaimed movies like The Graduate and Kramer vs. Kramer, Hoffman expressed regret for turning down offers post his breakout role.

In an interview with Time Magazine, he mentioned declining opportunities from directors like Ingmar Bergman and Steven Spielberg. He admitted that he spent years in therapy reflecting on those decisions and expressed sadness for the missed chances.

After The Graduate, I was kind of first in line of my generation,” he says. “When I think back, I think, I shouldn’t have turned Ingmar Bergman down twice. I shouldn’t have turned Spielberg down four times. I have spent many years in therapy finding out why. I tried to jeopardize my success, and in spite of myself, I couldn’t succeed. But I’m still sad that I made those mistakes.”

Dustin Hoffman eventually worked with Steven Spielberg in the 1991 family movie Hook. However, one can’t help but imagine the potential impact on Spielberg’s numerous industry-shaping and groundbreaking films if Hoffman hadn’t turned down those opportunities earlier in his career.
