Chris Pratt was at the receiving end of internet trolls multiple times in his career. Despite being one of the highest-grossing actors in the world, Pratt received backlash for his personal beliefs and even some of his unintentional social media posts. He shared that it all began when he talked about God and religion at the MTV Movie & TV Awards.

During the 2018 MTV Movie & TV Award, Chris Pratt received the Generation Award. He had nine important rules for his fans to remember during his acceptance speech. The Guardians of the Galaxy actor also had this to share during his speech, “God is real. God loves you. God wants the best for you.”
During an interview with Men’s Health, Chris Pratt recalled how that speech made him into an internet meme. He shared that he was not even a religious person but he was made into the face of religion in Hollywood. Adding to that, allegations were raised against the actor for associating with Hillsong Church.
Celebrities including Elliot Page called out the Jurassic World actor for the controversy (via X). However, Pratt revealed to Men’s Health that he had no association with the alleged anti-LGBTQ church. However, the actor’s publicist believed that he shouldn’t have made the comment in the first place. Pratt shared with Men’s Health:
My publicist would be like, ‘I’m sweating, Chris, I’m sweating. What happened to the it’s-an-honor-just-to-be-nominated-let’s-move-on fucking line that we talked about?’
Pratt also received hate for an Instagram post where he talked about his wife. His comment, thanking his wife for a “healthy daughter”, drew flak. Fans accused him of taking a dig at his wife since his first child was born prematurely. Pratt was deeply disturbed by the comments, sharing that he cried about it.

Amid the controversies, Chris Pratt received words of support from his GoTG director James Gunn. Gunn shared that the accusations against the actor infuriated him. He revealed that Pratt was kind to people and went out of his way to help kids. He bashed haters who were just making up stuff about Pratt and his politics. Gunn shared (via Men’s Health):
It absolutely infuriates me. Chris is unspeakably kind to people; he goes out of his way to help kids. He’s an especially loving father. And there’s a lot of stuff that people have literally just made up about him—about his politics, about who he is, about what he believes of other people, you know?
Gunn’s support for the actor came around the time when the director was at the receiving end of the internet himself for a bunch of offensive tweets. Actors including Pratt wrote a letter in support of the director at the time. Pratt also received support from Jurassic World director Colin Trevorrow, who shared, “I don’t know why we treat each other this way.”
The controversies haven’t hurt Pratt’s image as he continues to land big projects after Marvel and Jurassic World. He will next appear alongside Millie Bobby Brown in the Russo Brothers’ Netflix project, The Electric State.
