When Quentin Tarantino was casting for Once Upon a Time in… Hollywood, he had a unique process where he paired two actors for the two main roles of Rick Dalton and Cliff Booth. The pairing had to match the actor-stuntman aspect of the film and thus he had several pairings in mind. While he ultimately landed on Brad Pit for Cliff Booth, he had Tom Cruise also in mind for the role.

While speaking to The Happy Sad Confused Podcast, Tarantino revealed that he and Cruise talked about the project but eventually did not end up working together. He called Cruise a great guy and expressed his desire to work with him on a future project. He said,
