On stage at Summer Game Fest, Darren Barnet (the voice and likeness for the protagonist Jak), describes the character as being a “Triple threat” with his ability to control all three ‘colours’ of magic. Barnet states that:

“He [Jak] comes from nothing, I guess they would call him a “street rat”, but during a time of intense trauma, he summons the power to control magic. He then becomes part of the Immortals who are like the elite  “navy seal” squad of this world called Aveum, who are in the middle of Ever-War fighting for the control of magic.”

Spell Slinger: What is in the New Immortals Of Aveum Gameplay Trailer?

Immortals Of Aveum Poster

The trailer at Summer Game Fest shows the protagonist Jak in an intense fight on top of a giant “400ft tall” stream punk mech in the middle of an ocean. All while pursuing the main bad guy Sandrakk in an attempt to put an end to the Ever-War.

This trailer continues to show off the different styles of gameplay in Immortals Of Aveum, with Jak slinging spells to take down invading enemies while platforming up the side of the giant mech to get to its control room.

At first glance, Immortals Of Aveum seems to be channelling its inner Doom/ Bullet Storm having the player take down waves of enemies with spell combos, in a fast-paced gameplay environment. A spell that fires green bolts of energy like a machine gun and a blue energy whip to drag enemies closer, stuck out the most as being inspired by other familiar FPS titles. The gameplay trailer also shows a variety of armoured enemies who become cannon fodder for Jak’s magical abilities.

Towards the end of the trailer, we get a voice-over from Gina Torres as General Kirkan explaining how Jak has been chosen to manifest the three aspects of magic, along with Jak stating that the only way they win the fight is by working together.

All in all this Gameplay trailer makes Immortals of Aveum look like a promising FPS with an interesting premise. My only worry is the unoriginal gameplay might hamper the ability of the ‘EA Original’ to stick out from the crowd.

Yes, the game does have magic on its side as an interesting gameplay mechanic. However, the traversal abilities as well as the enemy types looking very similar to every other fantasy and sci-fi FPS that has been released in the last decade, put a dampener on things.

Immortals of Aveum has a summer 2023 release window and will be available for Windows, PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X/S systems. Only time will tell if this original IP will amaze audiences with a fantastic bag of tricks that shakes up modern FPS’ or If it will disappear into a puff of smoke on release.
