Spider-Man fans are already gutted after seeing The Great Web succumbing to corporate affairs, the new video seemingly a pitch for the game adds salt to this injury. Everything was perfect from its gameplay to the potential revenue generation, but it wasn’t destined to see the light of day. The developers of the title, Insomniac Games, were all in, but Sony had different plans it seems.
The leaked trailer for the game got significant attention from players across the globe, sparking a debate that surfaced speculations about the reasons for its cancellation. The video showcased a glimpse of what the title was supposed to be like. Apart from being visually stunning, it was likely to be a live-service game, featuring a multiverse setting.
It Was Already Destined to Make a Place in Fans’ Hearts
A recent video posted on YouTube suggests that the game was already a success given a better half of Spider-Man fans were interested in a multiplayer game. The section of the video reads:
Internal research shows that 65% of Spider-Man fans are interested in MP game, regardless of having played SM1 & MM.
Both, Marvel’s Spider-Man and Miles Morales were met with “generally favorable reviews” from the critics. On the whole, all of Insomniac’s Spider-Man games have sold 33 Million copies globally, generating several million in revenue. Many of those who have seen the video are left with a craving for the game.
Although the game appears to have been canceled, no official announcement for it was made. Considering this, Sony might rethink a strategy to revive it for players.
However, there is still some uncertainty, but fans’ love for the game may coerce them into doing so. Interestingly, users have started an online campaign to bring it back from the dead.
The Great Web Undoubtedly Had a Great Potential
The game had a huge potential that could have raked in millions of dollars in revenue. By the looks of it, it could have been the best game for the company so far. Nearly 100 million users were estimated to be active on PlayStation, and the addressable market for the game was anticipated to be 52 million. That certainly seems to be a great loss.
And it wasn’t just the team-up of multiple Spider-people, players might have faced off against other users to showcase their skills. Both PvE and PvP modes were reported to be included in the game. Moreover, the Sinister Six, the infamous band of supervillains from the Spider-Men universe, was planned to appear in the game.
For now, we can only say it was a complete Spider-packed game featuring almost everything a fan would want. The film sector already has its standalone Spiderverse, The Great Web could’ve been one for the gaming industry.
