With gods, demigods, and mythical creatures, Blood of Zeus wanted to portray the dark side of the story-enrich Greek mythology with Seraphim’s character. With Season 2, Seraphim has changed the perspective of several viewers as many sympathize with his character, despite being portrayed as an antagonist in Season 1. Seraphim’s character development in Season 2 left the fandom deeply moved. Interestingly, the Blood of Zeus creator once opened up about the narrative behind the Seraphim’s anti-hero character and the revelation is truly surprising.

Blood of Zeus Creators Explains Seraphim’s Story, Steering Away from a Dark Greek Tragedy.

One of the reasons behind the Netflix series’ immense success is the show’s resemblance to popular Greek mythology. The creators also revealed the inspiration behind Heron’s character was the popular Greek Demigod Hercules. However, when creating Seraphim’s character, the creators had to be cautious, as fully embracing Oedipus Rex‘s dark narrative risked making the character unlikable to viewers.

To avoid the grim elements of Seraphim’s backstory, the creators chose to focus on the rivalry between the two brothers. They avoided the darkest version of Seraphim’s story, where he sleeps with his mother and, in a twisted turn of events, kills her instead of his father.

Season 2 Episode 8 consists of several unexpected moments, mostly highlighting Seraphim, leaving a lasting impression on the audience. In an interview, Blood of Zeus‘ creators talked about their interesting take on avoiding the famous Dark Greek Tale, which could have affected the character’s reputation. Charley shares:

So that’s where the idea came from for Heron and Seraphim to be adversaries. Then, there’s also a little of Oedipus Rex,, where instead of sleeping with his mother, Seraphim kills his mother instead of his father.

Interestingly, he also talks about the theory of showing the two half-brothers as allies, but instead believes in portraying Seraphim as Heron’s nemesis. Seraphim is the half-brother of Heron and the son of King Periander. Since Queen Electra had an affair with Zeus, she ended up pregnant with twins; Seraphim is Periander’s, while Heron happened to be Zeus. King Periander’s brother tried to kill Seraphim after he found out about the infidelity, but failed.

Blood of Zeus Season 2 concludes with the epic clash between gods and demigods, leaving fans anticipating Heron’s mysterious fate. However, after the end of Season 2, fans may not mind the brother duo sharing more screen time as allies. Apart from all that, the creators also apologized for the delay in Season 2’s release.
