Back in 2003, veteran James Bond actor Sean Connery portrayed the role of Allan Quatermain in a film called The League of Extraordinary Gentlemen. The film was a complete disaster as the reviews addressed the film as just terrible and unpleasant to watch… at that time.
With the recent failure of superhero movies, it seems that people are giving the old movies a second chance and this week, it’s The League of Extraordinary Gentlemen. Taking to X, people talked about how the movie is actually good compared to modern films!
Sean Connery’s Failed 2003 Movie Is Actually Quite Good?
Starring alongside Peta Wilson, Stuart Townsend, and a plethora of actors, Connery portrayed the role of Qauterman in the 2003 film. Based on the story of an adventurer who is recruited by the government, the film is loosely based on the superhero comics that we adore today.
When the film was released back in 2003, it was a disastrous failure. Barely earning $100K in terms of profit, the film was considered quite an iconic failure and people never looked back. With the recent failure of superhero movies, it seems that audiences are turning their heads toward the olden days when the CGI was terrible but the nostalgia was real.
Taking to X (formerly Twitter), people talked about Sean Connery’s failed 2003 film The League of Extraordinary Gentlemen and how it seemed much better in today’s terms compared to 2003!
I might actually be the only person who thinks that The League of Extraordinary Gentlemen is an enjoyable movie. I've not seen it since it was released, but is it really any worse than the comic book movies that are being made today? pic.twitter.com/doM9cFNp7I

Mr Hyde was essentially a Dickensian Hulk.

It's better than anything Marvel has put out since Endgame.

You’re not. I love this movie. Same as I love Van Helsing from 2004

A lot of these movies now are better in retrospect with the amount of actually bad movies released since.

You’re not alone. It’s a fun little flick. It didn’t deserve the hate it got

The movie does “go hard” as today’s generation might put it but back in 2003, it wasn’t considered a good film. The League of Extraordinary Gentlemen received a low rating and has been avoided as a topic of conversation about Sean Connery’s career.
When Sean Connery Was Offered A Role Opposite Brad Pitt
Back in 2000, director Guy Ritchie was attached to a film as its director. Starring Brad Pitt in the lead role, the film is a comedy/crime and is a much-loved film around the world. In an interview with Empire Magazine, producer Matthew Vaughn talked about when he approached Sean Connery for the role of the antagonist in the movie.
“My phone rings one day and this voice goes, ‘Is this Matthew Vaughn?’ Er, yes. ‘It’s Sean here.’ I was like, ‘Sean who?’ ‘Connery. Interesting script. Set up a screening of Lock, Stock.’ When do you want to do it? “Three hours time. Here’s my number.’
Vaughn further continued,
“[Sean Connery said] That is a good film and (in a stage whisper) you’re not going to be able to afford me.”
Well, the rest is history. Although Connery did not have a role in Snatch, the film went on to earn a rating of 8.2/10 on IMDB and a whopping 93% on Rotten Tomatoes (compared to Sean Connery earning 5.8/10 on IMDB and 44% on Rotten Tomatoes for his 2003 film). Both films are available to purchase on Apple TV+ in the U.S.
