Considered to be a power couple of their time, the matrimonial partnership of American model and actress Cindy Crawford and American heartthrob Richard Gere was revered to be iconic as both of them were sought after for their looks and talents in equal measure. But when they eventually separated in 1995, the rumors surrounding the actor’s sexuality intensified as the reason for their split.

Although they were just false claims, they were still hurting the reputation of the Pretty Woman star, especially with him being a Humanitarian activist and social representative. But these claims were dealt with. After her appearance on The Howard Stern Show in 1995, right after their divorce, Crawford cleared the air about Gere’s sexuality being the reason they divorced at the end.

She explicitly stated that the star wasn’t gay, and they had separated due to other reasons. She also said that the star wasn’t affected by what people thought, but by the affect those rumors were having on his social work in Tibet. She said:

“[Richard] wasn’t concerned about the fact that people said he was gay, But I think that he didn’t like the fact that people possibly thought that he lived a lie. Because he’s always been doing this work on behalf of the Tibetans and he didn’t want to lose his credibility.”

Earlier during their interview, Crawford had also revealed to Stern why she and Gere had decided to move on with their lives separately.

Despite breaking their four-year-old relationship, people were surprised that Crawford showed no signs of distress or disturbance from it, and when asked by Stern about this, she revealed that it wasn’t a messy divorce that they went through.

She further revealed that they mutually ended their partnership because they were unable to spend time with each other no matter how hard they tried due to their work schedules and Gere’s dedication to his Humanitarian work. Thus, unable to connect on a deeper level with each other, they decided it was best to peacefully go their separate ways. The model even revealed that if she saw Gere again, she may just fall in love with him all over.
