One week after the release of Zack Snyder’s Justice League on HBO Max, a black-and-white version called Zack Snyder’s Justice League: Justice Is Gray was released on the platform. It left the fans wondering if the new version contained any new scenes but all doubts were cleared as the film was just a black-and-white version of the original movie. So what was the difference?
To start things off, the black-and-white version is what director Zack Snyder wanted his fans to see as the director and his team’s efforts truly emerged in this version of the film. It does not feel like a cash grab as it is not just a black-and-white filter slapped on the movie as it was made very specifically for fans who wanted the true Snyder experience.

If one wishes to watch Zack Snyder’s Justice League on HBO Max, they will stumble upon two versions of the film: one regular version and Zack Snyder’s Justice League: Justice Is Gray. The primary difference between the two is that the Justice Is Gray version is in black-and-white. Now, some people obviously see it as a money-making opportunity but there’s more to it: the black-and-white version completely changes the movie’s feel.
Apart from this, the film is boxed in a 4:3 aspect ratio, making it different from all the mainstream films. Zack Snyder specifically wanted his fans to see this version of the movie. Several films in the past have been re-released in black and white including, Mad Max: Fury Road and Logan. The change may seem insignificant to some but it completely changes the experience for a cinephile.

Before the release of the film, there were rumors that one scene in the film was changed but it never made it to the final cut. Snyder later released that changed scene on his Twitter/X account.

So, the question that now arises is: Which version is better? It just comes down to personal preference. For Snyder’s fans, the film is a treat to watch but at the same time, not everyone is a huge fan of it. However, it is safe to say that the Justice Is Gray version certainly brings out a different cinematic experience for the viewers.
