The art of acting is something that everyone has some degree of knowledge about but fails to practically display through themselves. Therefore, film stars are such celebrated individuals who bring a story to life through their talent, and among them, Brad Pitt is considered to be right up there with the best of the best.

While the list of films that he has worked in might be enough of an indicator of his greatness as an actor, he has also been nominated multiple times and has gone on to win two of them in his career. Although being nominated is a big deal for any star in the Hollywood industry, Pitt doesn’t remember his first nomination with all that fondness.

When it comes to naming the biggest names in the Hollywood industry who are revered as some of the most talented and gifted stars of all time, then you better believe Brad Pitt to be on that list. From action to comedy, romance, and many more genres, the star has left a lasting impression on all of them and then some. Therefore, he was bound to be recognized for his contributions in the form of an Academy Award sooner or later. But when he did receive his first, he couldn’t have been more divided on this decision.

The first-ever Oscar nomination that the Fury star received was for his 1995 psychological sci-fi flick titled 12 Monkeys, which also starred action legend Bruce Willis as the lead actor. The reason for his nomination was the sheer eccentricity that he was able to bring out through this outspoken individual, and with finesse no less. But in a past interview, he told that while he may have been putting on a great act in the first half, he felt the second half of his acting was just a poor imitation of the prior. He said:

“I nailed the first half of ’12 Monkeys.’ I got the second half all wrong. That performance bothered me because there was a trap in the writing. It’s not the writing’s fault, but it was something that I couldn’t figure out. I knew in the second half of the film I was playing the gimmick of what was real in the first half — until the last scene — and it bugged the sh*t out of me.”

While he may not have won that nomination, the film still went on to become a sci-fi classic for generations to come.

While he may be known for being the suave, playboy kind of a man from his recent films, Pitt’s 1995 sci-fi classic brings him into a new light. 12 Monkeys tells the story of a time traveler, who travels back in time from a dystopian future to stop a man from releasing a viral pathogen that will begin the world’s demise. When he does return to the past, he’s immediately captured and sent to a mental asylum, where he meets the man who might become the harbinger of doom that he was sent to stop.
