While one of the major reasons why the One Piece Live-Action series was a major success was due to the fact that it stuck to the source material, in an interview with GamesRadar, Taz Sylar revealed how he believed a little change was necessary when it comes to the character of Sanji.

Taz Skylar Made Sanji Care For Women Instead In One Piece Live-Action Series

In the interview stated above with GamesRadar, Taz Skylar said

It was the same with the way that he reacts or the way that he interacts with women, there was a translation to be had. And I think at the root of it, the root of any reaction is why you’re reacting like that. And I think for me, it came down to caring. As in, the background that he has with women in terms of the relationship he had with his mother, the relationship he had with his sister, the way that they interacted with him as opposed to the way that his brothers and his father used to interact with him. That to me, speaks volumes about why he may have a certain relationship with women in general and how we may react to it. In the sense that I don’t have to question at all why he cares so much about women. And that’s what I was hanging on to throughout it.

The above statement given by Skylar essentially means how the actor personally believed that Sanji’s love for women as portrayed in the source material such as the manga and the anime needed to be changed to that of a “caring one“, where he cares deeply for women instead of flirting with them occasionally.

So as opposed to trying to really meter whether it comes off as creepy or whether it comes off as flirty, I would just imbue it with, “I really care about this person.” And hopefully what came out was a good translation. I won’t judge the result; I’ll just tell you about the process.”

Skylar states that his version of the character isn’t creepy like Sanji comes off in the anime.

Impact Of Taz Skylar’s Decision To Bring A Change To Sanji’s Character

While the producing studios have majorly preferred to stick to the source material of One Piece, written by Eiichiro Oda, it looks like Taz Skylar’s decision to bring a little change to Sanji’s nature towards women might have been for the better.
