Adele mentioned during the performance that she was at a late-night gig once and was exhausted by the time she came back to her hotel room. While she was getting ready to go to bed, she reportedly found herself singing the lyrics to Carpenter’s hit single. She recalled,

As I got into bed that night, it was a very late night for me. I’m normally in bed by 9 PM. I found myself singing, ‘I’m working late. ‘Cause I’m a singer.’ The Sabrina Carpenter song…that song is my jam! It came out and I couldn’t f*ckin talk. It came out when I couldn’t talk or sing.

The lyrics she sang refer to the second verse in Carpenter’s song. Espresso also recently received an endorsement from pop star Katy Perry, who uploaded a reel on her Instagram, where she is seen lipsyncing to the banger as she goes to film American Idol.

To my friends, I was always like, ‘I just want to know what Adele’s feeling’. Like, how she made these gut-wrenching records. And I [just became] so fascinated with that… like, ‘Damn, I just need some of whatever Adele was drinking!’…And… then I got it.
