Deadpool & Wolverine has created an atmosphere of intense anticipation, unlike any superhero flick in a long time, especially being a Marvel tentpole. With a wave of superhero fatigue seemingly plaguing the studio, MCU films haven’t been faring well at the theatres. But that accursed cycle is believed to end with the forthcoming movie starring Hugh Jackman and Ryan Reynolds.

Turns out, Jackman’s epic comeback as Wolverine reportedly came close to falling to pieces courtesy of one of the most treasured MCU characters played by Robert Downey Jr.

Robert Downey Jr. Nearly Eclipsed Hugh Jackman in Deadpool 3

A new rumor, fresh from Daniel Richtman’s cauldron bubbling with insider info, claims that Robert Downey Jr. was reportedly supposed to have a cameo in Deadpool & Wolverine, only “it didn’t work out.” According to Cosmic Marvel on X, the scene was presumed to be a “buildup for Avengers: Secret Wars and as a payoff to a scene in the film.”

While some fans seemed upset by what could’ve been, one user remarked how Tony Stark’s return to the land of living would have “overshadowed the whole movie.” If not the entire film, then Downey Jr.’s Iron Man would most certainly have marred Hugh Jackman‘s iconic reprisal of the adamantium-clawed mutant.

But it looks like the rumor – despite stating otherwise – has convinced many fans concerning The Avengers star’s comeback in the third installment of the Deadpool franchise.

The veracity of the rumor remains unchecked so it’s better to take this with a pinch of salt. But if the Oscar-winning star were to appear in Deadpool 3, it could very well be a cameo in the film’s post-credit scenes. That would also ensure that Jackman’s role doesn’t get eclipsed whilst simultaneously laying some groundwork for Secret Wars. Alas, only time will tell.

There is Still Hope For Robert Downey Jr.’s Iron Man

Iron Man’s tragic demise in Avengers: Endgame was arguably the most heart-wrenching death in the history of the Marvel Cinematic Universe. It evoked collective grief amongst fans all across the globe as they mourned the beloved character’s loss, unable to accept that they’d never get to see him don the legendary suit again. But you know what they say, never say never.

When Jackman’s Wolverine died in Logan, the audience hadn’t been expecting his return besides Ryan Reynold’s sardonic mercenary in Deadpool 3. Kevin Feige, however, made it possible and here we are.

Appearing on The Official Marvel Podcast, the studio head sparked hope in the fandom after claiming how the Shawn Levy-helmed superhero flick could help set up the foundation for the return of many more classic characters, who, like Logan, fans had once bid farewell to. “I think [it] is a…peak into the future as we continue to…bring these comic book stories to life,” Feige said.
