When Sicario 2 was released back in 2018, one of the producers, Trent Luckinbill, stated that a third movie was in development. However, no further news about the Benicio del Toro starrer was heard until 2021. In January 2021, the producers announced the title of the sequel, Sicario: Capos, and shared that filming will begin in the spring or summer of that year. Later, another producer Molly Smith mentioned that the film was still in the development phase.

However, after a long wait, producer Basil Iwanyk has shared promising updates about the movie. Iwanyk, who also produced John Wick movies, revealed that the writing for the movie was in progress until the WGA strike interrupted the process. Iwanyk appeared in an interview with The Messenger and shared that as soon as the strike ends, the writers will be back penning Sicario: Capos.

Interestingly, the WGA strike is ending thanks to a recent agreement between the WGA and the AMPTP. Iwanyk further shared his excitement to see Benicio del Toro back in the action role. Iwanyk told The Messenger:

“When we can continue writing it. It was pencils down, but the idea is awesome. I can’t wait for Sicario 3. I could watch Benicio play that guy forever. I mean, I can watch Benicio in anything, but with that character, it doesn’t get old.”

Earlier, Josh Brolin also expressed his interest in returning to the Sicario franchise. Fans are hopeful about the project after Iwanyk and Brolin’s assurance that the project is still happening. Notably, the first two movies were written by Yellowstone creator, Taylor Sheridan.

Benicio del Toro played a major role in the first installment of the Guardians of the Galaxy. He reprised his role as The Collector in Avengers: Infinity War, where Thanos destroyed his base in Knowhere. Fans had wondered whether The Collector survived the events of Infinity War until James Gunn confirmed his fate in The Guardians of the Galaxy Holiday Special.

It was mentioned in the special episode that the Guardians bought Knowhere from The Collector. del Toro also hinted the character was alive during a promotional interview for Sicario 2. The Collector might have a future in the MCU, even after the conclusion of the Guardians of the Galaxy movie series. Interestingly, Jeff Goldblum’s character Grandmaster and The Collector are practically brothers and the two have combined storylines in the Marvel comics.

However, with the way things are going down at Marvel, it is doubtful whether del Toro will reprise the role again. Sicario: Capos is currently a more viable and interesting project for the actor than the Marvel role.
