Important to this approach lies a distinctive mechanism of panel layout and composition. This mechanism conveyed furious energy and confusion about the conflict zone. Kishimoto has carefully planned the chaos of the pages by creating perplexity in the battle while ensuring the storyline remains in smooth coherence.

In an interview via Fandom, Masashi Kishimoto reveals his distinct approach to portraying the fight scene, especially involving Naruto and Sasuke. The layout technique where Naruto and Sasuke’s panels are interconnected on the left and right page and the development of action progresses from the top of the page to the bottom, provides a quick and simple skim over the details.

This is a manga technique that I thought to use that is easy to follow, as both are connected it doesn’t matter where you are looking you can easily follow what both sides are doing at the same time.

Kishimoto explains that this technique has offered a flawless flow of the action sequence that makes the fighting more appealing. This, in turn, helps the readers to quickly skim through the pages while capturing the rapid ninja actions.

The technique has allowed a unified visual narrative for the readers to synchronize the action portrayal of both characters. It also happens to provide a panoramic view of the grand fight.

Strategic Mayhem Brings the Grand Battle to Life

Perhaps Masashi Kishimoto’s revelation about his seemingly chaotic panel layout acted as a complicated double-page spread randomly. He had admitted that he had done it intentionally to provide a duel proposal. It hides the disorientation of the real fight and accelerates the speed of understanding the battle.

The panels are messed up and random to express the confusion of the fight, and the reader also doesn’t know where to look. Also, because it makes you look around the page quickly, it adds a sense of speed to the battle as well.

While it appears to be a complex setting and difficult to follow, the panel layout was designed in such a way that the readers could understand the battle wherever they focused their attention. Though looking like mayhem, it captures the story’s coherence.

Kisimoto’s talent demonstrates his understanding of visual techniques for creating such an impressive experience for the readers. He also managed to provide the next level of realism through this fight sequence.

Naruto is available to watch on Crunchyroll and read on Viz.
