James Gunn, the newly appointed head of DC Studios, recently expressed his desire for Marvel to continue making successful films. Besides, the Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3 director also said his upcoming venture with DC will take a fresh approach. Preparing for his forthcoming Superman project, he said his experience directing the Guardians franchise was a great learning opportunity.

Superman To Be Nothing Like Guardians Franchise

Gunn also acknowledged that Superman would embody a different ambiance than Guardians of the Galaxies, as the new project will take a unique approach. Speaking about his upcoming venture, he said,

“I learned so much from making these [Guardians] movies,” Gunn said. “But it’s not like Superman is going to have exactly the same vibe as a Guardians movie. It’s actually quite different.”

Despite his recent move from Marvel to DC alongside Peter Safran, Gunn insisted that he doesn’t see the two comic book powerhouses as rivals. Instead, he believes that both studios can coexist in the industry.

“To be frank, I think the better Marvel movies do, it’s better for DC, and the better DC movies do, it’s better for Marvel,” Gunn explained. “When people see bad movies, they don’t want to spend more money on seeing more movies. So you want good movies to happen.”

James Gunn Emphasizes On The Existence Of Superhero Fatigue

Gunn also implied that attaining this involves acknowledging that “superhero fatigue” exists, even if it has nothing to do with superheroes.

“It has to do with the kind of stories that get to be told, and if you lose your eye on the ball, which is character,” Gunn said. “We love Superman. We love Batman. We love Iron Man. Because they’re these incredible characters that we have in our hearts. And if it becomes just a bunch of nonsense onscreen, it gets really boring. But I get fatigued by most spectacle films, by the grind of not having an emotionally grounded story.”

Superman: Legacy will kick off the Gunn-Safran era in the DCU, with Warner Bros. aiming to complete the project by July 2025.

“It focuses on Superman balancing his Kryptonian heritage with his human upbringing. He is the embodiment of truth, justice, and the American way. He is kindness in a world that thinks that kindness is old-fashioned,” Safran told reporters in January.

James Gunn Gets Fatigued By Spectacle Films

During an interview with Rolling Stones, James Gunn spoke at length about how superhero fatigue is real.

“But I get fatigued by most spectacle films, by the grind of not having an emotionally grounded story. It doesn’t have anything to do with whether they’re superhero movies or not,” Gunn said.

He also said that most blockbuster films primarily focus on a spectacle which overshadows the need for a story with emotional depth. But he believes it’s not specific to just superhero films.
