David Benioff and D. B. Weiss are the brains behind perhaps the greatest television series of the 21st century, Game of Thrones. The pair joined hands in the early 2010s to adapt George R.R. Martin’s A Song of Ice and Fire, a series of fantasy novels, into a fantasy drama series.

The story about the mythical land of Westeros, which premiered on HBO in 2011, shot the main cast as well as Benioff and Weiss to stardom. However, in 2019, the pair became more unpopular than Euron Greyjoy and Joffrey Baratheon among die-hard GoT fans due to the way they ended the epic series.

Accordingly, there are a lot of eyes set on their forthcoming adaptation of the popular Chinese novel, 3 Body Problem. The Liu Cixin-written story boasts fans ranging from Mark Zuckerberg to Barack Obama, which should only intensify pressure on Benioff and Weiss to get things right (from start to finish) this time.

What’s the 1 Similarity Between Netflix’s 3 Body Problem and Game of Thrones

As internet users expressed their fury at Daenerys’ death and Jon’s punishment, which forced him to rejoin the Night’s Watch, David Benioff and D. B. Weiss remained quiet and focused on their next project.

During this period, Netflix’s Peter Friedlander asked the pair to read Liu Cixin’s novels. They agreed and upon reading found a similarity between this series and that of George R.R. Martin’s. Weiss recalled to The Hollywood Reporter:

“What excited us about Thrones when we read George’s books was that this was something we had never seen onscreen before. In a lot of ways, this couldn’t be more different from Game of Thrones, but it had that in common.”

Benioff instantly knew what they were getting into, adding that the material was the first thing they’d come across since Game of Thrones where they were scared.

What’s Games of Thrones Creators’ Vision for 3 Body Problem

Netflix’s Don’t Look Up, which starred Leonardo DiCaprio and Jennifer Lawrenceused humor to show mankind’s ludicrous reaction to save the planet Earth from an approaching comet.

3 Body Problem, which is scheduled to premiere on the platform in March, is going to do the same, but in a much more serious way. In this saga, it’s going to take aliens 400 years to reach Earth, giving humanity plenty of time to strategize for the invasion. Speaking about their approach, Benioff said:

“It’s much less about fighting tentacle monsters and much more about how does humanity respond to this great existential threat? And, sadly for us, in the last few years we’ve seen that mankind doesn’t respond particularly well to existential threats. It’s hard to be idealistic and think we’d all come together if we had to. The aliens appeal to certain people who believe they’re superior to us — and, technologically, they are.”

3 Body Problem’ first season heavily features three GoT stars: Liam Cunningham (Ser Davos Seaworth), Jonathan Pryce (High Sparrow), and John Bradley (Samwell Tarly). Cunningham portrays a shadowy British intelligence chief, while Pryce is the leader of a murderous cult.
