While racking over a billion at the box office in most cases warrants a sequel, this hasn’t been the case for two of the biggest blockbusters of 2023’s summer, at least for now. While a sequel to Barbie is a bit improbable, as the creators and the actors haven’t showcased interest in a second part, on the contrary, Jack Black is completely on board with a potential sequel to the Mario movie.
Black, who has now bagged a Golden Globe nod for Peaches, was arguably the best part of the animated flick, which maintained the top spot at 2023’s box office before being dethroned by Barbie. But despite the Jumanji Star’s adamancy to get back to voicing Bowser, it has been just Crickets from Illumination’s side regarding the sequel.
It Has Just Been Crickets From Illumination Regarding The Super Mario Bros. Movie 2
Considering Illumination is notorious for relying on sequels and spin-offs heavily, one would assume a sequel to Mario would be on the cards from the get-go. But surprisingly, per Jack Black, there has been complete silence about the state of a sequel to The Super Mario Bros. Movie. Speaking on Variety’s Awards Circuit Podcast, he said,
“It has been radio silence. The only chatter has been coming from me, and I don’t even know if I’m allowed to chatter. I’ve been chomping at the bit to get back to business.”
But it can be said with absolute certainty that it’s just a matter of time before the sequel is eventually greenlit. Following Illumination’s history with franchises, there is no doubt sooner or later, they’ll try to capitalize more on Mario’s popularity, which, after Minions, can end up becoming their biggest cash cow.
Jack Black Was Shocked After Finding Peaches Made It to the Final Cut
Although The Super Mario Bros. Movie isn’t exactly one of the movies to keep an eye out for this award season like some other Summer hits, it did manage to secure a Golden Globe nod, thanks to Black. Bringing his Tenacious D side to this movie, Jack Black’s Peaches became an internet sensation and is now running for Best Original Song in a Motion Picture alongside I’m Just Ken. But it wasn’t until mid-way through production of the movie that the idea of Peaches emerged, which Jack Black co-wrote alongside Aaron Horvath, Michael Jelenic, Eric Osmond, and John Spiker.
The Tenacious D Star further expressed he was taken aback after finding that the song made it to the movie. He said,
“I’m real protective of the Tenacious D side of my career. They sent me a 30-second nugget of an idea, and it was hilarious. So I fleshed it out, added some lyrics and melody, and they loved it. And by God, they put it in the film. I couldn’t believe they did.”

While time will tell how long fans will have to wait for the sequel, Black did paint the idea of how it could be structured, explaining that it could go the Joker 2 route and be a musical. And considering that would mean more classics from JB, that’ll certainly end up making a more memorable experience than the first movie.
The Super Mario Bros. Movie is available to stream on Peacock.
