Gears of War is a franchise associated with Xbox since the Xbox 360 era. The title doesn’t have an alternative for the Xbox’s direct rival. The game’s satisfying gunplay and cover-based shooting mechanics are second to none.
The series’ last entry was released in 2019 and has never seen a title. Gears of War 6, the next title in the franchise, is reportedly in the works, as per an Xbox insider. This is after the developer studio, The Coalition, made some hires recently. If the rumors are true, there may be something cooking, and fans of the series may see some confirmation about the title’s development that isn’t anywhere to be found yet.
Gears of War 6 may be on the cards as per developer’s latest hires
Rumors of Gears of War 6, the next title in the series after 2019’s Gears of War 5, began in 2023 when the studio responsible for canceled two projects to focus on the title. This makes complete sense because, considering the nature and scale of the franchise, the next title in the series will most likely take a considerable amount of resources, manpower, and collective effort.
The next title will be released more than 5 years after the last title; the time between the two releases is more significant than any two consecutive releases in the series. Now, the studio has also hired professionals, which may have been done to get the team together for the title.
This was reported by a Twitter user going by the name of Idle Sloth. The tweet can be checked out here. Among the four individuals, their job positions are Environment Artist, Senior Lighting Artist, Associate Producer, and Cinematic Animator. The information was discovered by observing the four individuals’ LinkedIn profiles. The four individuals are from reputed names associated with the industry, such as EA, PlayStation, and Ubisoft.
It cannot be determined when the title will be released, but it is still at least one or two years away. That means that the game will likely be released in 2025 or 2026. Rumors about the overhaul that the upcoming Gears Of War 6 will receive suggest some exciting prospects.
Some have suggested that Gears of War 6 will build open and enhance the approach taken by the last title. Some rumors have even suggested that the title will be an open-world title. If the rumors about the shift in Gears of War 6’s setting and genre are true, the upcoming title may be the most ambitious game in the series. It would make sense for Microsoft and Xbox to push the limits with the title as there have not been any exclusive releases comparable with PlayStation exclusives.
If there is a series that one can see rivaling the quality and overall popularity of PlayStation exclusives, it is a series like Gears of War or Halo. This is mainly because both the series have no counterparts on the PlayStation ecosystem and are genuinely unique.
There was also a leak in September 2023 that suggested that the upcoming title might make its way to digital and physical marketplaces sometime in 2026, but again, one should take this with a pinch of salt. The leak branched from the portfolio of a Coalition employee who stated to have worked on an unannounced project that would be released sometime in 2026. Fans of the series were quick to take this unannounced title as Gears of War 6 out of excitement and optimism.
It is uncertain if the sequel will see familiar faces regarding the protagonists and other characters who will be vital for the story’s progression. Once again, nothing is known; in this regard, the title finds itself in a situation comparable to the upcoming Mass Effect title.
The original creator of Gears of War, Cliff Blezinski, stated that the original character of the series, Marcus Fenix, shouldn’t ideally return and should be given the heroic sendoff he deserves. This is mainly because the character was in is early 60s in the last title, and it would mostly feel stretched if the series kept him as the leading man. But fans may think otherwise, as Marcus has become associated with the franchise just like any other protagonist.
