Margot Robbie got her big break with her fourth movie role as Naomi Lapaglia in The Wolf of Wall Street. The Martin Scorsese film launched her into the ranks of top-tier Hollywood actresses. Her transition to the grand and colorful world of Hollywood was challenging, as she has openly discussed in several of her interviews.

Following the success of The Wolf of Wall Street, Robbie landed leading roles, but one thing the Once Upon a Time in Hollywood actress couldn’t handle was dealing with the media and paparazzi. She often found herself labeled based on her appearance, which undermined her work.

Margot Robbie Hated The Media Labeling Her With A Sexist Remark

The Wolf of Wall Street promoted Margot Robbie’s character as the “hottest blonde alive”. Robbie’s insecurities crept in as she feared being called out as an imposter. The paparazzi attack pushed her body image issues further to the point where she considered quitting acting. But, her mother convinced her against the decision and she came back even more resilient with each role.

The Suicide Squad actress despised the media labeling her based on her white-blonde looks rather than her talent. Robbie has worked with great directors including Martin Scorsese, Quentin Tarantino, and Wes Anderson. Despite this impressive portfolio, the I, Tonya actress was frustrated with the headlines that called her a “bombshell”. Robbie opened up about this issue in an interview with RedEye magazine:

“I really hate that you can do a project with people like Martin Scorsese and some of the best filmmakers in the world, […] and the whole thing gets completely swept aside with one comment like, ‘Blonde Bombshell Sizzles the Screen!’ It’s like, ‘Wow, I just had the experience of a lifetime, and you summarized it to that.’ Which always happens to everyone, and it really p*sses me off. I hate using the word ‘bombshell.’”

The Amsterdam actress even recounted an instance when she dyed her hair brown for a role, and she was called a “Brunette bombshell”. Clearly, the labeling intended to put down Robbie’s artistic value is not working, as the Terminal actress is flourishing in her career.

In 2019, Margot Robbie starred in Bombshell, a biographical movie alongside Charlize Theron and Nicole Kidman. The movie explores the s*xual harassment scandal at Fox News, which exposed CEO Roger Ailes. The movie had an initial working title of Fair and Balanced, but it was later renamed to Bombshell.

The title serves as a sad reminder of how the media and opposing masses perceived the victims, all of whom were working media personalities. The opposing forces, including the media, tried to discredit their works and allegations using this label. Margot Robbie played the fictional character of Kayla Pospisil, who represented numerous women who faced s*xual harassment in their workplace.
