In the past, The Mummy and The Scorpion King were the franchises that made audiences crowd to the cinemas in large numbers, and leading these franchises was none other than Brendan Fraser. The actor’s experience, mixed with the new young blood of Dwayne Johnson on the sets were the ingredients that made the films within these franchises such a delight to watch. The starting films of both series collectively made a whopping $600 Million!
And thus, after the inevitable end of both franchises, people were left asking for more. And thus, Paramount came up with the reboot of the series in the form of their Dark Universe in an attempt to make a cinematic universe like the MCU. But contrary to the expectations of the first film, which happened to be a reboot of The Mummy starring Tom Cruise failed to meet the standards of the box office. Now, Fraser reveals his thoughts on why the movie failed.
Brendan Fraser Shares His Thoughts On The Failure Of Tom Cruise’s The Mummy Reboot
Being a part of the original films in the past, Brendan Fraser is someone who can be called a veteran in the field. With his experience playing the role of Rick O’Connell in the older films, he picked out the factors that made the franchise such a big hit in the early 2000s. Thus, whenever the discussion about the reboot of the franchise came up, everyone wanted to know what the George Of The Jungle star thought about it.

Thus, when Paramount decided to reprise the franchise without Fraser, many fans were bummed about it. And when the first film of the Dark Universe was released that cast Tom Cruise as the lead, many people were hopeful that this would be the homage that the original deserved. But to everyone’s surprise, the film couldn’t make the cut at the box office compared to its $95 Million budget and failed eventually. In an interview with GQ, Fraser pointed out the major factor that was missing from the reboot. He said:
“It is hard to make that movie, The ingredient that we had going for our Mummy, which I didn’t see in that film, was fun. That was what was lacking in that incarnation. It was too much of a straight-ahead horror movie. ‘The Mummy’ should be a thrill ride, but not terrifying and scary.”
And by rushing to make a universe as successful as possible without taking care of the subtleties, the studio backtracked its plans to start over again.
