Scarlett Johansson and Ryan Reynolds are admittedly two of the most sought-after actors in the industry right now. From their extravagantly successful Marvel franchises to their solo projects, they are attracting eyes with their performances everywhere they go. However, there was another news a little over a decade ago, that put the spotlight on them and brought them under public scrutiny.
As everyone knows, Reynolds and Johansson were married for a few years back in the late 2000s. They split in 2011, which was promptly followed by Ryan Reynolds’ wedding to Blake Lively, whom he met during their Green Lantern shooting back in 2010. Although it was never publicly confirmed by any of them, rumors spread of Reynolds cheating on his then-wife Johansson with Lively.
As a messy split followed, with sources claiming that Scarlett Johansson was apparently bitter about the whole situation, people have wondered if there is any truth to the rumors. In an interesting turn of events, in a recent interview with Gwyneth Paltrow’s Goop podcast, Johansson’s comments about being married to him have brought this issue back into the spotlight.
Scarlett Johansson and Ryan Reynolds’ messy split
Rumors of Scarlett Johansson and Ryan Reynolds dating started floating around in 2007. The next year, confirming these rumors, they announced that they were engaged and promptly tied the knot. Although they seemed happy enough initially, assumptions of potential conflicts started breaking two years later. Coincidentally, that was the year, i.e., 2010, when Reynolds met Blake Lively during the shooting of their movie Green Lantern.
Although things were kept on the down-low at first, 2011 brought the news of the ending of Reynolds and Scarlett Johansson’s three years of wedding bliss. And with Ryan Reynolds and Blake Lively promptly saying their ‘I dos’ the next year, it inevitably brought assumptions of potential cheating on Reynolds’ part.
What didn’t help was the continuous news breaks from unidentified ‘sources’ the popular media outlets came out with during this time. With more than one claiming how bitter Johansson was as she felt betrayed. A source allegedly claimed to National Enquirer that Scarlett Johansson was,
“Incredibly bitter about it. In a way, Scarlett feels like Blake actually stole Ryan Reynolds from her because it was when he started shooting Green Lantern with Blake in 2010 that everything fell apart.”
They also claimed that even without any proof, Johansson allegedly thought that Lively intentionally set out to seduce Ryan Reynolds at that time, even after knowing that he was married. As a result, their wedding brought back some lingering pain and betrayal for her.

The rumors, now, though, are more than a decade old, and as such are what people claim, as water under the bridge. Especially as none of them have ever publicly confirmed or specifically commented on this, the rumors have remained, just rumors. Scarlett Johansson, though, might have alleged the cause here and there in a few interviews, although never directly.
For example, she once implied that they might have been too competitive to be compatible. Talking to Cosmo in an interview, she said,
“The logistics of being with another actor are challenging. There has to be a real understanding of how you share your time, especially when two people’s careers are going at the same rate. Or even if one person is more successful than the other, that also proves challenging. There may be a competitive thing.”
Although he was never named, up until that point the only actor she had been married to was Reynolds, with her then-husband, Romain Dauriac being an art collector. So it can be concluded that she was indeed talking about her relationship with Reynolds. One thing Johansson has been praised for time and again, though, is her grace.
And she has proved it once again in the recent podcast of Goop, where she was joined by Gwyneth Paltrow. As the conversation brought up everything and anything in their lives, Paltrow claimed how they,
“Love a good Ryan Reynolds in our home.” Almost having an epiphany she continued, “I forgot that you were married to Ryan Reynolds! Goals!”
Laughing at Paltrow’s ‘moment’, Johansson replied implying how it’s perfectly possible as they “weren’t married very long.” Paltrow continued, “It still counts!” which Johansson wholeheartedly agreed to and went on to remark, “He’s a good guy!”
Well, even though the rumors might never get confirmed, they have since both moved on with their excessively successful careers and lives. With Reynolds and Lively welcoming their fourth child earlier this year, and Johansson now married to Colin Jost and being busy with her 8-year-old daughter Rose, from her marriage to Dauriac, and two-month-old Cosmo with Jost. Both seem to be doing amazing with their lives.
