Though initially, the age gap between the duo was not bothersome for Ross, despite the gang constantly making fun of him. But it quickly catches up to him in The One With The Proposal, Part 1. In this, Ross invites Elizabeth to watch a play with him, but instead of the play, she’s more excited about a water balloon fight.
This makes Ross question her immaturity, and he breaks up with her. But after a while, he second-guesses his decision, but Elizabeth, proving him right, drops a water balloon on his head.

In the sitcom, before the birth of Emma, Ross had already embraced fatherhood with his son Ben, whom he shared with his ex-wife Carol. But initially, the show makers considered a surprising twist in Ross’s plotline involving his then-girlfriend Elizabeth, a student from his class.
As reported by CBR, the makers of the sitcom planned a dramatic season 6 finale with Elizabeth announcing her pregnancy, leading to a storyline where Ross would grapple with a paternity question.
But the same was not greenlit, and the creators went ahead with Rachel’s pregnancy storyline in season 7. The main reason for scrapping the sequence was to avoid redundancy in Ross’s romantic entanglements. Following this, Elizabeth’s storyline was written off the series, paving the way for Rachel’s solo pregnancy storyline.
