It must’ve been among the 37-year-old actress’ most memorable experiences. Beyond the trailblazing achievement, likely to cause ripples across the industry and allow for more indigenous storytelling, Gladstone’s journey through the Golden Globes was characterized by other elements, which the star recently shared in an anecdote on Jimmy Fallon’s talk show.
Comparing one such aspect to the famed South Korean TV series Squid Game, she dubbed a behind-the-scenes functioning, where other talents would scramble to rush to the bathroom during commercial breaks, as “cutthroat.”

Gladstone visited The Tonight Show Starring Jimmy Fallon and was asked to elucidate on the happenings she encountered at the 81st Golden Globe Awards, where the actress’ emblematic career milestone for her devastatingly haunting performance in Martin Scorsese‘s latest chef-d’oeuvre generated headlines and created history.
Describing her experience as “wild,” the uber-talented performer claimed that having grown up watching such shows, only to attend them later in life, introduces one to its behind-the-scenes functioning.
“You see how the sausage is made … It’s a production,” Lily Gladstone prefaced, highlighting that there’s more to these ceremonies than what meets the eye (literally). While talking about the commercial breaks occurring during the Golden Globes—where a crowd packed with Hollywood celebrities hastily rush to the restroom and back to make a return to their seats in time—the actress drew a humorous parallel to a prominent Netflix series.

Following was her statement:
“When the commercial breaks start, everybody’s scrambling to the bathroom and back. It was … cutthroat. It was a little like ‘Squid Game.’ If you were out of your chair when the cameras were rolling, you were stuck there.”
Show host Jimmy Fallon added, “Next break, we will come get you and put you back in the chair,” Gladstone agreed that is precisely how it works at these award shows. In addition to providing insight into the off-camera functioning of the Golden Globes, the actress shared her initial reaction on receiving a call to star in Martin Scorsese’s critically acclaimed film with frequenters in the industry, such as Leonardo DiCaprio and Robert De Niro.
It was basically what one would imagine.

Previous reports suggested that Gladstone almost left the acting industry during a sluggish patch in her professional life at the height of the global pandemic. She also considered a career change and was on the verge of signing up for a data analytics course (via THR). However, a fateful Zoom meeting request from none other than Martin Scorsese would soon change everything.

Few people could only dream of experiencing anything of this magnitude. But for Gladstone, it’s a reality. Initially, though, the Certain Women star was so taken aback by getting a call to star in Killers of the Flower Moon, helmed by one of the most esteemed directors in Hollywood history, alongside veteran superstars like DiCaprio and De Niro, that she threw her phone across the room!
Telling Jimmy Fallon of her exhilarated reaction, Lily Gladstone stated:
“In the moment … I screamed and threw my phone across the room … It just went yeet! It did land in my dad’s chair, though. He [saved it].”
