Gary Oldman, the veteran actor known for portraying a plethora of roles in iconic movies like Darkest Hour, The Dark Knight, and, the Harry Potter franchise had some controversial things to say about Sirius Black.
Daisy Ridley, known for her roles in the Star Wars franchise was absolutely fuming at Oldman. Being a fan of the Harry Potter franchise, Ridley claimed that Gary Oldman’s statements on Sirius Black were almost blasphemy!
Gary Oldman’s Comments On Sirius Black Were “Almost Blasphemy”
Appearing in Harry Potter and the Prisoner of Azkaban back in 2004, Gary Oldman nailed the role of Sirius Black as Potter’s guardian figure. Appearing in three Harry Potter films, the character found his demise in Harry Potter and the Order of the Phoenix, and fans were devastated.
Well, in a recent interview, Gary Oldman seemed to recall that his acting in the franchise was “mediocre” at best. Stating that if he had read the books he would have done it better, Oldman did not like his work in the franchise. Daisy Ridley, known for portraying the role of Rey in the Star Wars franchise, disagreed with Oldman’s statements in a recent interview with Josh Horowitz on the Happy Sad Confused podcast.
“To me, it was almost blasphemy that he spoke badly about Sirius Black. I was just like ‘What are you talking about?’ I would say that he is the best I think I’ve ever seen him in Slow Horses. Excellent”
She further continued,
“Oh my God, Sirius and Harry! Hello? Most important, some might say, relationship to Harry as like an adult/parent/guardian situation so I wasn’t actually fuming at him but I was like ‘Wow! Yeah, how can you think that that wasn’t like the best thing in the world?'”
Well, although Gary Oldman thinks that his acting in the franchise was mediocre at best, the actor didn’t shy away from punching Jason Isaacs in the face for a scene in the Harry Potter franchise!
Punching Jason Isaacs Was Gary Oldman’s Idea!
Fans may remember an iconic moment in Harry Potter and the Order of the Phoenix when Sirius Black appears behind Lucius Malfoy (Jason Isaacs), orders him “Get away from my godson” and punches him right across the face. Well, a behind-the-scene video shows that that scene was Gary Oldman’s idea!
“I just love to try one… Where I walk straight up to [Isaacs], he turns, and he has this look of a slight surprise on his face, and I deck him!” said Oldman.
Director David Yates can be heard saying “Let’s do it. Let’s do it. Let’s do it.” and that is how the scene was shot! Although Oldman might consider his acting as mediocre in the Harry Potter franchise, most of the fans disagree with the veteran actor’s words.
