Mark Ruffalo has made a name for himself in the industry. His widespread popularity owes a lot to his on-screen persona of the Big Green Giant The Hulk in the MCU. But sadly the actor has his own troubles for helming this iconic role. In an interview, Mark Ruffalo described how ridiculous he looks on set while being in the character of the superhero.

According to the actor, every time he appears on the set to play Hulk, it takes no time for him to become the subject of the joke. Sadly, it sounds very funny how the people backstage laugh at the monster who is crushing his enemies on screen.

Being the Hulk comes with a price

Mark Ruffalo joined the MCU as the Gamma-Radiated Superhero in The Avengers and since then he has never looked back. Replacing Edward Norton who played the Hulk in The Incredible Hulk, Ruffalo gained widespread popularity for his role, but indeed it cost him something.

Speaking to GQ, the Shutter Island actor revealed to everyone that the man-canceling motion capture (mocap) suit he has to wear every time for appearing on-screen makes him look ridiculous:

“I have to wear what I call the man-canceling suit, which is this really tight leotard that makes you look big where you want to look small and small where you want to look big.”

Mark Ruffalo added that every time he walked wearing that on set, the other co-stars would all make him a subject of laughter as his appearance resembled a Chinese checkerboard:

“It was so humiliating and all the actors, whenever I’d walk on set, would just start laughing at me because they were in their cool superhero costumes and I’m wearing these ridiculous pajamas that made me look like a Chinese checkerboard.”

Although all of this is the result of jest and the friendship shared by the actors in the franchise, it sounds quite sad how our beloved Bruce Banner actor misses slipping in a cool costume like the others instead of a mocap suit.

Robert Downey Jr’s hilarious response to the costume

Further Mark Ruffalo discussed how the Iron Man star Robert Downey Jr. hilariously responded to him in The Avengers while that Hulk-catching Tony Stark scene took place.

“There was even one point where I catch Downey. Hulk catches Downey, puts them on the ground right and I decide I’m gonna do this Hulk roar over him in my little leotard. And he just kind of has, he has his eyes closed, and he opens one eye and he’s just like, ‘really Ruffalo?'”

Although this was Robert Downey Jr’s initial reaction, Ruffalo recalled that while working sometime later in Avengers: Endgame, the Tony Stark actor understood the woes of mocap. He even sympathized with him for handling the suit:

‘In the last movie, he came up to me and he said: ‘I have a lot of compassion for you. And I was like, “Why?” He’s like, “Because I see how hard it is for you to stand around in that costume all day.”’

But it must be acknowledged that they do receive the fruit of their hard work afterward when their projects bag in a lot of public recognition and fans pour in love from all around.
