Martin Scorsese and his favorite star Leonardo DiCaprio have done countless films together for the past two decades. Christopher Nolan, on the other hand, has only ever worked with DiCaprio on a single film that was one of Nolan’s highlights.
In 2010, Christopher Nolan and Leonardo DiCaprio released Inception in theaters across the world. Portraying the role of Cobb in the film, Nolan and DiCaprio had an awkward interaction when the director revealed that he had not seen the Titanic star’s one movie.
Christopher Nolan And Leonardo DiCaprio Had An Awkward Interaction
Before we dive into the story of the awkward exchange of words between the Dunkirk director and the Inception star, we need to dive into a little history lesson. Back in 2004, Martin Scorsese directed and released a film titled The Aviator.
Starring DiCaprio in the lead role, The Aviator was based on the real-life of Howard Hughes who pursues the growing aviation industry with a mental health illness looming in the background. The film was quite a success, however, Christopher Nolan had the idea for the film as well but he wasn’t allowed to make his vision come true. In an interview with Variety, the director confessed that it was very emotional for him to let all of that hard work go down the drain.
“It was very emotional to not get to make something I’d poured all that into,”
This led to an awkward encounter between Christopher Nolan and Leonardo DiCaprio on the sets of the 2010 film because the director confessed something to DiCaprio. Since it hurt so much, Nolan admitted to DiCaprio that he had not seen his 2004 period piece The Aviator.
When Cillian Murphy Reminded Christopher Nolan of Heath Ledger!
With Cillian Murphy portraying an iconic role as J. Robert Oppenheimer in Christopher Nolan’s Oppenheimer, the world and the director were mesmerized. In an interview with Variety, the director talked about how Murphy’s phenomenal performance made him remember Heath Ledger’s Joker from The Dark Knight.
“It was really in the hair and makeup tests, which we shoot on Imax and in black-and-white—You start to see the actor bringing an icon to life, putting the hat on, the cigarette in the corner of his mouth. You’re starting to see how he moves.”
He further continued,
“Seeing Cillian put this iconography together, it reminded me of my hair and makeup tests with Heath Ledger for the Joker,”
Nolan’s Oppenheimer received a high rating of 8.4/10 on IMDB and a whopping 93% on Rotten Tomatoes. The iconic 2023 film is available to rent on Apple TV+ in the U.S. alongside Leonardo DiCaprio and Christopher Nolan’s only film together Inception.
