Many fans’ childhood memories have been attached to Tobey Maguire’s Spider-Man. People have grown up watching his webhead cling from one wall of the building to another. He made his debut playing the titular character in the year 2002 in Spider-Man, helmed by Sam Raimi. The first film scored a box office record of $825M worldwide.

Tobey Maguire returned onscreen to play the beloved character again in Spider-Man: No Way Home. For the audience, it brought back the nostalgia of seeing their three favorite web heads onscreen, that too together. The Brothers star played Spider-Man in three movies in 2002, 2004, and 2007. He also looked forward to coming back for a fourth sequel, but due to creative differences between him, Sony Pictures, and Sam Raimi, the project was canceled.

Years have passed, but fans haven’t gotten over the iconic upside-down kiss of Spider-Man and Mary Jane. Many Spider-Man movies have come and gone, but none of them have attempted to recreate the scene. Well, many of the viewers might think it was just a kiss, but only Maguire knows what troubles he faced while shooting that scene. Kissing Mary Jane upside down wasn’t easy for him and even his co-star Kirsten Dunst agrees with it.

Once, Dunst sat down with W Magazine to talk about the famous scene, which she doesn’t consider to be popular. According to her, it was kind of a difficult kiss scene because the rain was pouring down Maguire’s nose and it became hard for the actor to breathe in the Spider-Man suit. She quite understood how special the kiss was in the books, but it was not the same for them in this awkward situation.

“I didn’t think about it that way. But the way it was presented to me, Sam gave me this book of famous kisses, so that made me realize how romantic and special Sam wanted this to be. Even though it wasn’t necessarily feeling that way with Tobey hanging upside down.”

In another interview, Maguire explained the trouble he had breathing as Mary Jane’s character kissed him. The kiss blocked the air passage for him, which was quite suffocating for the actor.

The movie brought together Andrew Garfield, Tom Holland, and Tobey Maguire’s Spider-Man, making it a remarkable movie in fans’ hearts. The film scored a box office record of over $1.9B. The audience loved the iconic trio so much, that they even demanded the cut scenes from the film. That’s why Sony Pictures even released an extended cut for the same.

Tobey Maguire bid adieu to the character in the year 2007 and reprised his role in the 2021 movie. He has already expressed his thoughts on why he returned. When he got the offer to come back, he reveals that he was “intrigued immediately”.

“I gotta say, I was intrigued immediately. In that conversation, the intention, the kind of love and celebration of these movies, and what it meant, I think to Amy and Kevin was apparent. To me, when artists or people who are, um, steering the creative process have a kind of authentic, genuine intent of celebration and love, it just was so apparent in both of them that I just wanted to join that.”

The 47-year-old says that he’s a big fan of Andrew Garfield, Tom Holland, and these movies. But he was also confused about what was going on in the film as it was all kept under wraps. But he loved working with the actors and reliving the memory once again.
