The film has reportedly been in development for a while and the filmmaker has expressed his wish to cast Depp in the movie. In a recent conversation with French magazine Première, Gilliam shared some updates about the project, including the cast of his new film.

In a recent interview with Première, filmmaker Terry Gilliam revealed that he has finally found the funding for his new project, The Carnival at the End of Days, which would be starring, Johnny Depp in the role of Satan, alongside Jeff Bridges, Adam Driver and Jason Momoa. He also shared that he is still looking for an actress for the movie.

“Now we need a woman to complete casting,” he said, as per World of Reel. He also expressed his confidence in the script and the cast of the movie, noting that it is scheduled to begin filming in January 2025, but it could change.

We are trying to determine exactly when and where it will be done. For the moment, filming is scheduled for next January. We’ll see. And I have a pretty good cast — And it’s going to be complicated because it has to be realistic. And it’s going to be very expensive! We’ll see what happens, but it’s a good script.

Gilliam is reportedly working with a young screenwriter Christopher Brett Bailey for the movie. This would also mark Gilliam’s return to the director’s chair since his 2018 adventure comedy film The Man Who Killed Don Quixote. The new movie is also expected to be Gilliam’s final project.

While Johnny Depp is set to play the role of Satan in the movie, the 12 Monkeys director has shared that Jeff Bridges will be taking on the role of God. “But he won’t be the God we’re used to,” he told Première during the conversation.

He shared that in the movie God represents nature and is capable of communicating. He also revealed that bringing his vision for God into the film would be very complicated and expensive. “I’m going to need animation to bring it to life because in the scene with God, there are at least fifteen animals,” he said.

“It will be very funny for those who like to be offended,” he further said, highlighting the film’s potential to entertain those with a penchant for controversy. The filmmaker has earlier shared that the movie will be a comedy. No release date for the movie has been disclosed yet.
