Joe Russo has claimed that no film can take over Endgame’s opening at the box office. The trailer for Avatar: The Way of Water was released on November 2, 2022. After its release, people started comparing the visuals and CGI of the film with some of the films and shows of MCU’s phase 4. The first film Avatar, which was released in 2009 broke all the records and became the highest-grossing film of all time. After which Anthony and Joe Russo’s Avengers: Endgame took over the title with a $2.797 billion box office haul.

However, it was only for a while. Avatar once took back the title of the highest-grossing film with its re-release in China. It currently has a total box office collection of over $2.9 billion. The sequel of the 2009 film is set to release in December this year. And it is expected to be the biggest hit of all time. However, the director of Avengers: Endgame, Joe Russo, has something else to say about it.

Joe Russo Claims No Film Can Beat Avengers: Endgame’s Opening Weekend Record

Avengers: Endgame marks the end of Marvel’s Infinity Saga. The film followed the events of the  Avengers: Infinity War and narrated how Avengers defeat Thanos with the help of Infinity Stones. The movie was one of the most highly anticipated films for Marvel fans.

After its release, the film crossed the mark of 1 billion just within a week of its release. The film grossed $1.2 billion worldwide in its opening weekend. With this Endgame became the highest worldwide opening in history. The film also became the film to cross the 1 billion faster than any film in history.

Avengers: Endgame also became the highest-grossing film of all time but was soon overtaken by James Cameron’s Avatar. Joe Russo, the director of Endgame has recently claimed that no Endgame record can not be beaten by any other film.

In his recent interview with Variety, Joe Russo said “It will never happen again. That was the apex of that era of theatrical filmmaking. When we started AGBO, we already felt the winds shifting.” He did not go into the details of why he thinks that Endgame will continue to hold the record.

It could be due to the post-pandemic effect on the box office. Many films have not seen a huge audience post-pandemic, the same can happen with Avatar 2 as well.

Why Avatar: The Way of Water Can Challenge Avengers: Endgame?

However, Avatar has a huge following and as the film holds the title for the highest hiring film, anything is possible. The original 2009 Avatar was re-released in September prior to the release of The Way of Water.

Its re-release led it to cross the mark of 2.9 billion at the worldwide box office. It was the first time a movie has recorded such a collection. And seeing that franchises have been doing quite well at the box office, James Cameron might be preparing to break several world records with The Way of Water.

Joe Russo is certain that no film can ever break Endgame’s record. However, the trailer for Avatar 2  has received a good response. The sequel is just about a month away from its release. It would be interesting to see if Avatar: The Way of Water breaks Endgame’s record or not.
