One of the most revered science fiction series of all time, The X-Files, is reportedly coming back. Although we don’t know how soon, the reboot of the series is currently being developed by the Black Panther helmer, Ryan Coogler. Starring David Duchovny and Gillian Anderson as the leads and FBI special agents, The X-Files is now a celebrated part of pop culture. Inspiring loads of merchandise and other stuff, fans have been eagerly waiting for the series.
In a recent interview, Anderson shared her opinion on the reboot’s development. While stating that she respects Coogler’s vision, the actress also revealed whether she’d be coming back to reprise her iconic role.
Gillian Anderson on Ryan Coogler’s The X-Files Reboot
The X-Files for years have been hailed as one of the best television series ever to have aired. From its narrative to its casting, fans have loved every single moment of the sci-fi drama series. And its leads, Gillian Anderson and David Duchovny have become memorable parts of pop culture.
After the series’ creator, Chris Carter, accidentally revealed that a reboot is in the works by Black Panther director Ryan Coogler (via On The Coast with Gloria Macarenko), there has hardly been any news. Although Carter did remark recently that he has given Coogler his blessings (see The Wrap), nothing really is known about the upcoming reboot.
Anderson, however, in a new interview with Today remarked,
“It’s so funny because for most of my life, since I have finished The X-Files, every interview I do, people have asked and the answer has always been, ‘Nope, not going to happen, not going to happen.’ Now, Ryan Coogler, who is the director of Black Panther — brilliant, brilliant director — has approached Chris Carter to say that he wants to do a take on it, and I cannot think of a better way around for a reboot to happen.”
While the actress seems super appreciative and encouraging to Coogler’s decision to reboot the series, the question remains whether or not she will be willing to return as FBI special agent Dana Scully.
Will Gillian Anderson Return as Dana Scully?
Gillian Anderson left The X-Files after season 8 but returned for a two-season revival of the show during 2016-18. Also having appeared in two spin-offs of the hit show, the actress has, needless to say, become the heart and core of the tale.
Recently on Today, the actress spoke highly of Ryan Coogler and his upcoming reboot, stating that she is excited to see the director’s take on the fan-favorite American TV series. But when asked about whether she would be willing to star as Dana Scully, Anderson remarked,
“Whether I am involved in it is a whole other thing. I’m not saying no. I think he’s really cool and I think if he did it, it would probably be done incredibly well. And maybe I’ll pop in for a little something something.”
After previously having stated that she is finished with the tale (via The Hollywood Reporter), Anderson’s recent comment has apparently left the door wide open for her return.
While it would be a long wait for the reboot to become a reality, the possibility of having The X-Files back on screen, albeit as a reboot, seems exciting enough.
The X-Files can be streamed on Hulu.
