Written by Neil Druckmann and helmed by Chernobyl creator Craig Mazin, the second season of the Joel and Ellie story has already been greenlit by HBO. In a recent interview, creator Craig Mazin let it slip that there could potentially be more than two seasons for The Last of Us if HBO and the fans agree.

The Last of Us May Extend Beyond 2 Seasons!

As the series continues to dazzle fans around the world, The Last of Us has been acclaimed as a legendary series. With similar visuals from the 2013 game, the journey of Pedro Pascal’s Joel and Bella Ramsey’s Ellie continue to keep the strings tight with the audience.

It was confirmed recently that the entirety of the first game will be completed during the first season of The Last of Us. With a second season already greenlit, writer Neil Druckmann and creator Craig Mazin have already begun their work writing the second season. Taking the tale further, the second season will cover The Last of Us Part II‘s storyline.

In his chat with IGN, creator Craig Mazin talked about how they have already begun their work on the second season of the show. He stated, however, that it’s a mammoth task since the story is wider than the previous one. His statements hinted at allegedly having more seasons in the world of The Last of Us to drag the audiences deeper into the cordyceps-filled world of the series.

“Well, we have started to talk about it” Craig Mazin started saying on the status of the second season. “It’s a big animal to take apart, you know? Because it’s a much bigger story, and it’s a more complicated story, I think it’s a beautiful story”.

The Chernobyl creator further continued,

“So Neil [Druckmann] and I are just now sort of figuring out how to – because it’s more than a season’s worth of television, for sure, but you know, ultimately, we can’t get there until folks watch it, and you know, HBO gives us the good news”

The above-mentioned lines hint at the possibility of there being more than two seasons that could span the story of the game into a well-developed series. It does sound a bit disappointing that The Last of Us Part III might not happen and thus, the series would also run out of source material on which to base their future seasons.

The series was based on the game of the same name that was the brainchild of writer Neil Druckmann. When the original game came out, it was beloved by people around the world for the emotionally-heavy storytelling that it endeavored to showcase.

In a recent interview, Neil Druckmann stated that there are currently no plans for a The Last of Us Part III game. Stating that there would be a game if they have a good enough story to focus their emotions on, Druckmann stated that there might not be another one for some time soon.

“If we can come up with a compelling story that has this universal message and statement about love — just like the first and second game did — then we will tell that story. If we can’t come up with something, we have a very strong ending with Part 2 and that will be the end.” said Neil Druckmann.

This also brings in the question of what HBO will do after the second game has been turned into a series and they run out of source material. Hoping that the Game of Thrones Season 8 scenario doesn’t repeat itself, the people pray that they can continue to watch and play the series and the games from The Last of Us universe.

The next episode of The Last of Us is set for a release date of 29th January 2023 and will be available to stream on HBO Max.
