While taking inspiration from sci-fi blockbusters, Best Picture winners, and Hitchcock thrillers, Gerwig confessed The Umbrellas of Cherbourg was an obvious inspiration for Barbie. “That’s an amazing movie and astonishingly beautiful, I loved the use of color and the surrealness,” Gerwig stated. Falling for the 1964 colorful and vibrant musical, the director mentioned “everything feels painterly, and that was a big part of it.”

Evidently, Greta Gerwig confessed to taking inspiration from The Umbrellas of Cherbourg for its vibrancy and thus added the bubbly, technicolor concoction to Barbie. She further mentioned how one of Margot Robbie‘s looks was also inspired by Catherine Deneuve who appeared in the 1964 musical. However, her movie was majorly inspired by Al Pacino’s cult hit The Godfather

Confessing to be a fan of the cult classic, Gerwig stated, “We all know why The Godfather was in there,”

“Because it’s a triumph of Robert Evans’ and [Francis Ford] Coppola’s aesthetic genius. It was so fun to watch again. It’s the best ever; it’s a masterpiece.” Greta Gerwig explained her reasons.
