However, unlike his Jumanji franchise, his other successful projects like the Journey franchise were unable to expand into sequels. After delivering two successful movies, the third installment appears to be taking too long to become real.

President of his company (Seven Bucks Productions), Hiram Garcia, dived into the reason why the threequel to the popular franchise is taking too much time.

Why Dwayne Johnson’s Journey 2 Sequel is Not Happening?

In an interview with Collider, his producing partner, Hiram Garcia reflected on why the anticipated Journey 3: From the Earth to the Moon, is still not out.

Given that the first two movies in the Journey franchise were successful, fans are eager for a threequel. As per Garcia, the actor chooses whether a franchise needs to be extended or not.

He shared,

“It’s funny that you say that, and the truth is people always ask because we’re in a very fortunate situation where our partners always want a sequel to everything, right? It’s a matter of our slate and the stories we want to tell.”

Since his projects have been fan-approved most of the time, studios have always wanted to explore the franchises further, but the actor has already set his priorities.

He continued,

“We’re very calculating in what we want to tell, but, look, if our studio partners had their ways, they want a Journey 2: Mysterious Island sequel…It’s like all of those movies, the studio was clamoring for a sequel, but we felt collectively, ‘Look, we told a great version of the story. Now, we want to go to tell another story somewhere else.'”

He further added,

“He’s just been very selective about what he chooses to come back for sequels. So the Fast Universe was one of those, obviously Jumanji…We have a lot of stories planned for that. But it is a challenge of balancing, ‘Okay, what are the sequels we’re going to do,’ because we’ve been very fortunate that the majority of the projects we’ve done, there’s been a request for sequel, and his availability has always been the thing that made it a challenge.”

Rather than focusing on a franchise in particular, Dwayne Johnson is keen on exploring different projects, which helps him flaunt a diverse portfolio. Whereas, the Journey franchise was initially planned for a threequel, which the actor confirmed canceling in 2018.

After the first movie titled Journey to the Centre of the Earth (2008), another movie starring the Black Adam actor was released in 2012. It gained immense success, becoming one of the fan favorites, with many eagerly awaiting its future projects.

Plans for a third and fourth installment were announced shortly after the success of the 2012 movie, but they never came to fruition. Since then, no development has been made, with the actor confirming the end of the franchise on Twitter (now X) in 2018.

Responding to a fan, he dashed everyone’s hopes for another Journey movie. He revealed that his packed schedule, along with the lack of a solid script, played a major role in its outcome. The actor himself admitted that they were unable to come up with a script, which was the reason why it could never come to fruition.
