Joel Daniel Coen and Ethan Jesse Coen, collectively renowned as the ‘Coen Brothers’, have made quite a splash in the entertainment industry with their exceptional filmmaking skills.
Famous for their ability to frequently turn any genre they’re working on into a subvert or parody, the duo has gifted the world some of the most remarkable big-screen works to date since their career started in 1984.
But the time after 2018 saw them taking quite a lengthy break as nothing came forward from the mastermind duo for five long years after their critically acclaimed masterpiece for Netflix, The Ballad of Buster Scruggs.
However, that break has seemingly come to an end as the Coen Brothers recently revealed the next project they would be working on: A pure horror film.
Coen Brothers’ Next Project is a “Pure Horror Film”
With the start of the year 2024 has come some major news for all the people who are fans of the Coen Brothers: They have a movie lined up after their 5-year-long dreaded break since The Ballad of Buster Scruggs in 2018!
Although this movie won’t be their immediate next project, with another one of their spectacular movies hitting the theatres pretty soon, it has still become one of their most awaited ones ever since the duo announced a bit intro into the project.
Recently, during a masterclass event at the Tromsø International Film Festival, Ethan Coen took it upon himself to let his fans know a bit about the new script he has developed with his brother. As per Montages, he said:
“It’s a pure horror film, and it gets very bloody. If you like Blood Simple, I think you’ll enjoy it.”
Adding to his revelation was his wife Tricia Cooke’s comment, who claimed that the film is “fearly funny”. Well, now fans know that they have yet another one of those movies that they had been longing for so long lined up on the Coen Brothers’ bucket list!
As for the Blood Simple reference: For those who don’t know, the 1984 film was an independent neo-noir crime movie by the mastermind brothers that featured a man hiring a detective to find out if his wife is indeed cheating on him and kill her if his suspicions are true.
Despite it being the first-ever movie written and directed by the filmmaking duo, Blood Simple earned massive acclamation from fans and critics alike, paving the way for multiple other projects from the brothers.
Thus, if the Coen Brothers’ next project is going to be anything like their 1984 critically-commended blockbuster, then it would most certainly be nothing short of a watch-worthy success — something that fans could easily look forward to.
The Coen Brothers Also Have Another Movie Lined Up Before That
While their next “pure horror film” has earned the honor of being anticipated by fans, the Coen Brothers have another movie lined up in the meanwhile for fans, which would be released a little further into this year.
This movie is none other than Drive-Away Dolls, the comedy thriller that would serve as the middle project between their previous 2018 western comedy movie, i.e. The Ballad of Buster Scruggs, and their next “pure horror film”.
Starring big names like Matt Damon and Pedro Pascal among others, action-road crime fiction will notably feature the story of two women who embark on a spontaneous road trip to Tallahassee, Fla, in an attempt at a fresh start.
However, things go seemingly wrong for them as the two women (played by Geraldine Viswanathan and Margaret Qualley) cross roads with a group of unqualified criminals along the way, adding a whole other tone to the comedy thriller movie.
All in all, Drive-Away Dolls is a good film to look forward to while fans are waiting for a project like Blood Simple from the Coen Brothers, which will be hitting the theatres pretty soon by the 23rd of February, 2024.
