Helldivers 2 might be one of the biggest surprise hits of 2024, yet the developers of this game cannot get a break. They are tirelessly working on this game to give gamers a well-designed and smooth experience. But there’s always something that slides from their hands and ends up disappointing one player or another. It started with the game’s server limit, and even though that limit has been fixed, the issues continue.
Previously, players had been complaining about the game’s weapons. It appears some of the in-game weapons are somewhat overpowered when compared to others. And let’s not forget that problem with the cheaters. But now, yet another problem has arisen, and CEO Johan Pilestedt has given his opinion on the issue.
Helldivers 2 CEO explains how the game’s liberation mechanic actually works
Players are in a constant state of struggle in Helldivers 2. They fight their enemies, and sometimes they lose, and other times they win. As a result of these wins and losses, players sometimes end up liberating some locations, and sometimes they even lose a stronghold.
This is how this game works: it is designed to be dynamic, and it is designed to continuously change the course of this ongoing war. Previously, it was thought that players were experiencing these ever-changing scenarios due to some pre-made decisions by the game’s game master.
This seemed all fun at first; players were appreciating the fact that someone was literally working day and night to improve their experience in the game. But recently, that praise has turned into frustration; they can be seen complaining as they keep losing the wars they previously won.
For example, if a player works for hours and wins a war on a certain planet, they would definitely hold it as their own stronghold. But to their surprise, they are being taken back by the enemy factions with ease. And they took their complaints online and mentioned their frustration on Twitter.
To no one’s surprise, Arrowhead Game Studios’ CEO Johan Pilestedt replied, and he explained to the fans of the game how this thing actually works. He said, “I’ve seen many @helldivers2 posts about a planet’s liberation amount – at peak CCU the community is able to liberate high amounts but as soon as peak passes, the enemies manages to take the planet back. Each planet is sized constantly (think HP regen), this means that at low CCU planets lose liberation %. It’s a push and pull!”
This means that the enemies are only able to take back those planets when the CCU, or concurrent user count, is low. The more Helldivers there are on the field, the fewer chances there are for players to lose the planets they liberated.
It’s an interesting concept and a nice trick to make sure players keep on playing the game. But this would no doubt be frustrating in the long run. Every game dips at some point, and then the remaining players are left suffering due to this mechanic.
Maybe the new gameplay elements would fix this issue?
This frustrating solution might get fixed once players finally get that update with mechs and NPC Helldivers. These new elements would make it a bit easier for those playing alone to push those annoying opponents back to where they came from. But still, Johan Pilestedt’s response did get some colorful replies from the fans of the game.

Except the bugs don't push back hard enough to even be a threat. No way they are going to touch Heeth or Angels Venture at this point so we'll just be sitting here for 4 days till a new Major Order happens.

Its a fun way of keeping people playing but not havent them meet weekly deadlines (resets) that they will get behind on like you see in stuff Destiny and WoW (retail/current expansion).

After all, those armored bugs and robots can be a handful when taken alone. This game is literally designed to be a co-op online adventure.
