Quitting in online multiplayer games is a common problem, and Gears of War is no exception. Despite The Coalition’s efforts to curb this behavior with harsh penalties introduced back in 2019, players continue to abandon matches mid-game in 2024.

Players often abandon matches after losing the first round of the game. This undermines the effort of their teams and spoils the experience for others. Players highlight that this issue is especially noticeable in games like Gears 4 and 5.

A recent discussion on the Gears of War subreddit highlighted the frustration players feel due to frequent quitting. This trend is particularly noticeable in Gears of War 4 and 5, where the competitive nature of King of the Hill (KOTH) mode suffers greatly from early leavers.

In 2019, The Coalition introduced a strict penalty system to deter quitters in Gears 5. This system imposed lengthy bans on players who repeatedly abandoned matches, with some penalties extending up to two years.

Despite this, quitting remains an issue. Players argue that the penalty system isn’t enough and that more needs to be done to protect those who are left behind in a match.

One proposed solution is a loss forgiveness system for players who are affected by teammates quitting. Similar to systems in other competitive games, this would prevent players from losing ranking points when their teammates abandon the match.

This is also something that should definitely be thought of in advance for Gears of War: E-Day. While there is no confirmation that the game will have a ranked mode like previous titles, these things should be taken into consideration if it does.

The Gears of War community continues to call for better solutions. Many players suggest a more sophisticated matchmaking system that considers players’ quitting history and penalizes habitual quitters more effectively.

Others recommend introducing features that allow remaining players to vote to forfeit a match without penalties if a teammate quits, similar to the systems in games like Overwatch.

The introduction of harsher penalties for quitters, combined with player-friendly features like loss forgiveness and improved matchmaking, could be the key to mitigating the quitting epidemic.

While The Coalition’s efforts in 2019 were a step in the right direction, more needs to be done so players have a more enjoyable multiplayer experience. These situations highlight the importance of having sportsmanship and a good mental in online gaming.

While quitting may offer a temporary escape from a tough match, you have to remember it’s a team game and you’re leaving your team at a disadvantage.
