This masterpiece by Miyazaki is the one that introduced players to difficult gameplay without much of a handholding for them. This game then eventually went on the start the trend of Soulslike games which are known for their difficult and exciting gameplay. Demon’s Souls also later went on to inspire FromSoftware’s Dark Souls series which first came out in 2011.

Hidetaka Miyazaki talks about Demon’s Souls connection with Dark Souls

Since the first Dark Souls game came out two years after the release of Demon’s Souls, there are many who consider the Dark Souls series to be the sequel to Demon’s Souls. This is mostly because the Dark Souls series takes inspiration from Demon’s Souls, and they both come with difficult gameplay, have similar fighting mechanics and a leveling-up system.

Moreover, over the years since Demon’s Souls officially didn’t get a sequel fans were convinced that Dark Souls 1, Dark Souls 2, and Dark Souls 3 were the sequels. However, game director Hidetaka Miyazaki in an interview from 2011 clearly spoke about the connection between both of his games.

During the interview, Miyazaki was asked whether he would describe Dark Souls as a sequel to Demon’s Souls, or more of a spiritual successor. To this, he replied, “Dark Souls is not a sequel to Demon’s Souls by any means”.

He also added that players will find similarities in their gameplay as both of the games have been developed by the same team. Miyazaki also replied to a question regarding both games sharing the same universe by saying

Moreover, despite sharing some similarities, the Dark Souls series has its own set of differences with Demon’s Souls. One of the major differences that sets both of these games apart is their approaches to the boss battles. In Demon’s Souls, the bosses come with weaknesses that the players can exploit, however, this is not the same with the Dark Souls series.

Will fans ever get to see Demon’s Souls 2?

Demon’s Souls was released more than a decade ago, and it is natural that fans want to see the cult classic game getting a sequel. Moreover, Miyazaki has made it clear that Dark Souls is not a sequel to Demon’s Souls and they do not share a similar universe. Therefore, this means that both the games are different and that Demon’s Souls should get its own sequel.

All of this means that down the line Demon’s Souls fans might get to see a sequel if Miyazaki is willing to make one. Additionally, he had previously during an interview with Game Informer stated that, most of the decision on whether Demon’s Souls will get a sequel or a remaster is with Sony.
