Jane Wu Connects with Blue Eye Samurai on a Personal Level
Being raised in Asia, Jane Wu struggled against the bombardment of the Western culture in her life. Instead of losing her morale, Wu used it as a motivation to express her frustration through the 2023 animated series.
The 34-year-old shared her views on connecting with the main character of the series on a personal level in an interview with Polygon.
I grew up in Asia and Western culture was always bombarding us, telling us that our Asian culture wasn’t as important or wasn’t as fun. So it was kind of the arrival of that bombardment. It’s all a long revenge for me.
Wu revealed that her depiction of Mizu in the series is all a huge revenge for her. Well, for what it’s worth, Wu succeeded in making an impact with Blue Eye Samurai.
The first season of the series received nothing but love from fans. So much so that it currently holds a phenomenal 9.0/10 rating on IMDb via 16K votes.
One Blue Eye Samurai Sequence That Shows Jane Wu is a Genius
The 2023 series features a plethora of memorable battle sequences as Mizu is on her way to get revenge against the people who made her an outcast.
During the series, Mizu even infiltrated a fortress full of capable warriors. But the scene that was Jane Wu’s favorite was when Mizu takes on 10 dojo fighters. She shared her thoughts on the scene in the same interview with Polygon.
So we talked a lot about Mizu and her character because she doesn’t talk very much and the other 10 dojo students were mouthing off at her. So I said, ‘Let’s rip out their teeth. Let’s injure their mouths because she wants them to shut up.’ And who doesn’t wince at teeth being knocked out?
Now, that’s one way to vent out frustration through the main character. The scene where Mizu destroys the 10 dojo fighters is in one of the earlier episodes of the series.
So, Jane Wu did a great job of setting the tone for the audience and simultaneously made fans fall in love with Blue Eye Samurai.
