Damien Chazelle Only had Praises for Dunkirk

Prior to the 89th Academy Awards, Damien Chazelle rolled out compliments for Christopher Nolan’s Dunkirk and compared the 2017 masterpiece to one of the greatest films ever to be created in human history. The film tells the layered story in such a simplistic manner, that too at a perfect pace. He explains that the film reminds him of silent cinema, and even if the film is stripped away from the sounds, it will narrate the story.

What Christopher Nolan achieved with Dunkirk is a bit like what he has pursued throughout his career. It’s cinema in music, a continuous and unbreathable stream of images and sounds that we feel in an elementary and primal way.”

“For such a gigantic film, which describes such an epic story, it exudes simplicity. Faces, bodies, land, sea and sky. It reminded me of the lessons of silent cinema, when you strip away all but the essentials, you can really watch the beating heart of a thing.”

The La La Land filmmaker continued that the film is a “miracle” and the film is “pure cinema” and Nolan’s genius can attract large audiences to cinema halls across the world.

“The thing, as it happens, is a battle that few people in the United States have heard of. How could a film called Dunkirk, in today’s context, attract so many people to theaters across the country? It’s almost a miracle, it’s a big middle finger to all those who say that there is no longer any room for risk-taking on the big screen.”

“It’s pure cinema, it speaks the same language as the shot that goes from flame to desert in Lawrence of Arabia, or from bone to ship in 2001… In its combination of the wide angle and the subtlety, the huge shot and the tiny, telling every detail, the film comes closer to David Lean’s best work than any recent film whose I remember.”

Damien Chazelle concluded by saying how gifted Christopher Nolan is as a filmmaker and all of his projects are fantastic but in his opinion, Dunkirk is “the most personal and moving film he has ever made.
