“It’s better if I can read it later”: Black Panther 2 Director Ryan Coogler Reveals Why Chadwick Boseman Refused to Read His Original Script

Black Panther 2 is just a week away from its release. Director Ryan Coogler along with the cast of the film is busy with its promotion and has been providing some exclusive information about the film. The cast of the film recently visited Chadwick Boseman’s grave to ask for his blessings before the release of the film. Now the director of the film, Ryan Coogler has shared what the dynamic looked like before the untimely death of the Black Panther star.

Coogler has recently shared that Chadwick Boseman did not get to read the script of Black Panther 2 before his tragic passing. He also shared that when he talked to the late actor he could tell he was tired and that is the reason he refused to read the script at the time.

Ryan Coogler Revealed Chadwick Boseman Never Read the Script of Black Panther 2

While talking to The Official Black Panther Podcast, Ryan Coogler revealed his last conversations with Chadwick Boseman. During this conversation, he revealed that Boseman turned down the opportunity to read the Black Panther 2 script.

He said, “My last conversation was calling him, asking him if he wanted to read it before I got notes from the studio. That was the last time we spoke.” He also said that he had just finished the script and wanted the Marshall star’s input before he got notes from the studio.

Coogler also shared that he could tell from listening to his voice that he was tired. The Creed director said that before talking to him, Boseman asked his wife to leave the room, as he did not want her to hear anything that would violate the NDA.

Ryan Coogler said, “He was tired, bro. I could tell he was tired.” He further stated, “And I could tell he was laying down. We were talking. And Simone [Boseman] was with him.”

The American producer-director then shared that he asked Simone Boseman to leave, but she did not want to leave him alone. And he could feel something was not right with him.

Chadwick Boseman Said It’s Better If He Reads The Script Later

Ryan Coogler shared that when he asked the God of Egypt star to read the script of Black Panther 2, he denied it by saying, “it’s better if [he] can read it later.” The Black Panther director shared that he later found out that it was just simply a case of Boseman being too tired to read anything.

He also shared that the Captain America: Civil War star said that he did not want to get in the way of whatever notes the studio might have.

Coogler shared that immediately following the release of Black Panther, he started working on the sequel. And when the script was completed, he was excited to share it with Chadwick Boseman.

Ryan Coogler also shared that he researched multiple stories and characters in order to introduce someone new in the sequel. At last, he settled on Namor the Sub-Mariner. The Fruitvale Station director said that he wanted to explore T’Challa’s character in the sequel.

The director shared that when he found out about the news, he could not believe it. Later Denzel Washington called him and told him it was not a rumor.

Chadwick Boseman made his MCU debut with the 2016 film, Captain America: Civil War. Later the American actor was featured in the 2018 Black Panther. He went on to reprise his character in several Marvel films and made his last appearance in Avengers: Endgame.

Chadwick Boseman has been fighting colorectal cancer for years and kept the disease a secret throughout almost all of his MCU tenure. The actor passed away before Black Panther 2.

Black Panther: Wakanda Forever is set to hit theatres on November 11, 2022.
