Sam Worthington’s Avatar franchise has become one of the most significant film series of all time and this is rightfully so. Not only is it directed by the legend that is James Cameron, but the films also feature an exceptional cast, with the likes of Zoe Saldana, Kate Winslet, and Sigourney Weaver.
On top of the performances, it also has some of the most visually stunning CGI, for which it has been praised time and time again, all of which have helped it become the record-breaking series that it has.
The second part of this, Avatar: The Way of Water, had almost as much hype surrounding it as its first, 2000 film. Ever since then, it has been announced that the film will be followed up by three other parts, with Avatar 5 being released in 2031. Worthington has recently announced that Avatar 3, which is to release sometime in 2025, is set to begin work soon. While talking on this matter, he teased what can be expected from the future parts of the series.
Sam Worthington Teases the Future of Avatar
Sam Worthington recently gave an interview with Variety at the premiere of his upcoming film, Lift. Here, he touched on the subject of the much anticipated, Avatar sequels, specifically Avatar 3. He mentioned that the film has already started its work, already in post-production, and the cast and crew will go back to work in a month, starting in February.
“We go back to work on it in a month and it’s big,” Worthington said, “It’s bigger than you can imagine.”
He then teased fans about what can be expected from the film and all that will follow it. He stated that the movie was going to be big. He then elaborated on this, stating that it will be bigger than anything that the fans can imagine and will be nothing like the ones before it.
Avatar 4 Has Already Began Filming
James Cameron has also spoken about the future of the Avatar franchise, talking to People Magzine about the plan he has in place for the next parts. He explained the fourth film is to feature a big-time jump that will require the younger stars to look a lot different. They will be gone for six years and come back looking older. To capture this perfectly, the scenes that are set before the time jump have already been shot.
“We did the [motion capture] capture on three and the live-action photography on three as an intermingled production with [‘Avatar: The Way of Water’], and we even did part of movie four because our young characters are all going to have a big time jump in movie four,” Cameron said. “We see them and then we go away for six years and we come back. And so the part where we come back is the part we haven’t shot yet. So we’ll start on that after three is released.”
However, the parts where they are back and grown up are yet to be shot. The director explained that this will not be worked on until Avatar 3 is finished and released for the public to see. The continuation of filming for Avatar 4 would take a lot of time considering the release of the third film has been set by Disney to be in December 2025.
